Security refers to the condition of being free from threats as well as danger. Stability refers to the
ability to remain unchanged over a duration of time within some reasonable conditions of use
and storage (Dictionary). In each and every state, peace and stability are the key pillars of
development and prosperity. They serve to protect lives and spearhead development as people
are able to interact and engage in income generating activities that contributes to a country’s
gross domestic product. They help in curtailing inequality and injustices meted on people by the
military when engaging in war with other countries. They equally help in preventing the
aftermath of conflicts which include; loss of lives, property and loss of sources of income.
(Dumasy). It is therefore important that the world remain a safe place for humanity through
enhancing and safeguarding the measures put in place to promote harmonious relations between
people across the world and different states.
Some of the key treaties that have boosted the sustenance of peace and stability in the world
states as follows;
According to the charter of the United Nations (1945), one of the missions of the UN was to help
in safeguarding international peace and security. This would be effected through joined efforts
with member states in removing of threats to peace as well as inhibiting acts of aggression that
would interfere with the state of peace. They also resolved to use peaceful means in accordance
with international law and justice principles to finding solutions to international
misunderstandings and disputes that are a threat to the state of peace in the world (UN). The
United Nations was formed in 1945 after the world had gone into World War I and World War
II. There was a state of aggression in the whole world as countries had regrouped and aligned
themselves according to their allies and foes in the ended wars. UN helped in restoring peace and
bringing to an end the state of suffering that causalities of the war had gone through. All the
member states are obliged to adhere to the laid down principles and laws that guarantee peace in
the world.
According to the NATO’s Washington treaty (1949), one of their sole purpose was to solve any
arising international disputes among member states in a way that does not tantamount to
undermining international security peace and justice. They also sought to bar member states from
the use of threats in a way that would weaken the roles of the United Nations (Nato) This treaty
was binding to all countries found in North Atlantic area. It has played a key role in attaining
stability in the world as members are bound to adhere to the treaty.

According to Warsaw pact treaty (1955), all the member states had an obligation to avoid the use
of threats or force in finding solutions to their international misunderstandings and rather adopt
to peaceful ways to settle disputes and uphold international peace as well as security. This treaty
that guaranteed friendship and assistance among the members was binding to all European states.
It therefore laid a blue print to promotion of peace in the world as it deterred members from
using any violent means in dispute resolution.
