Current Telecommunication Setup
The current telecommunication setup in the company includes Voice over Internet
Protocol with voice and data routers that are connected to T3 line. The T3 lines have a maximum
carrier capacity of 44.736 Mbps. Communication between corporate headquarters and China-
based headquarters is enabled through a satellite base station operating at OC1 with a maximum
speed of 5.48 Mbps. Headquarter stations at Albany and Pontiac locations are running at T2 at
6.312 Mbps. These locations do not have VoIP but instead use the PSTN for voice
communications (University of Phoenix, 2019).
Improvement Recommendations
In order to scale up the communication network so as to support the growing needs in the
organization, there are a few recommendations that Plastic Inc. VoIP can help the organization to
advance its data and voice communication since the signals travel through internet or nay web-
based connection. As such, it is recommendable that the company expands its VoIP services to
the other two locations besides changing the T3 link to OC3. An additional data/VoIP router will
be needed to allow VoIP connections in these locations. To cut down the upgrade costs, it is
recommended that PSTN be removed be replaced by VoIP while fiber optic network will be used
as the backbone of the network. New VoIP routers and switches’ implimentation will be needed
at the two locations and this will require a change in legacy and cabling to up-to-date copper
cables which offer higher transmission speed. The corporate headquarters should consider
increasing their bandwidth capabilities from T3 to OC3. Such an increase will create room for

higher bandwidth capacities and capabilities. All employees should be trained on how to use the
new equipment.
Protocol Analysis
Standard Protocol Recommendation
IP Fast Ethernet Use a minimum of Cat 6
cabling for Voice over
internet protocol/desktop
connections
TCP Local talk Upgrade such connections to
all outside networks from t3
and T2 to OC3.
Cat 5 FDDI Incorporate IPsec for VoIP
SMTP Gigabit Ethernet Use standard VoIP
connections across all
organizational infrastructure.
HTTP Asynchronous transfer mode Incorporate standardized
VoIP training.
Effects of Improvement
The main drawback in having new devices is having to train company staffs on how to
use them, an undertaking that could be time consuming since different people learn at different
rates. The company will be required to hire some technical staffs for the purpose of this training.

Additionally, the new devices and cables and their installation will be an expensive undertaking.
As such, this would initially appear as revenue taking at the expense of overall business growth
while procuring devices that the company has no guarantee whether they will work.
Nevertheless, adapting new technoologies in networking will help the organization streamline its
operations in the long run.
