Question Two
1. A state is defined as the territory that has its own establishments and populations. State
can also mean the large set of people who inhabit specific territory and they are
connected through history and culture. It is very tempting when it comes to viewing of
any legitimate state as the nation that has the right of exercising their political authority in
a set of certain boundaries. For instance consider America. Its original boundaries had
only Eastern half of Mississippi River. This excluded Florida. The Midwest of the nation
was acquired through the purchase of Louisiana from the state of France in the year of
1803. In the year of 1821, Florida also purchased Spain. Given such history, a question
comes up asking if America has a right for all of its territories within the current
boundaries. To answer the question concerning the freedoms and rights of nations that
have relatively settled boundaries. For instance America, the account of regional rights
may aid in resolving disputes that are related to settlement, decolonization and finally
succession. Most of the states have tried their level best in extending the boundaries
through subsidizing the settlers. A good example for this is the nation of Israel and
Morocco. This happened due to the boundary issues concerning Western Sahara
(Steinmetz, 2018).
2. Nationalism is the political system which places the country above all other countries
within the world. It can also be defined as the loyalty plus devotion that belongs to the
nation, particularly the sense of the national consciousness. Nationalism plays a great role
towards building international relations in many ways. It helps to deal with the complex
issues that are related with the nature of identity and even belonging. It also helps in
creation of legitimacy for international system of all the nations.

3. Nationalism has both negative and positive consequences. On the negative side, it makes
one believe that his or her country is better than the other countries. For instance it
brainwashes the population by making them believe that everything the government says
is right. This is seen ion the book of George Orwell of 1984. On the positive side,
nationalism creates effective communication between the state and its people. This is
because the people are always in constant agreement with the government. It also creates
peace and harmony within the state.
4. There are various systems of international relations as seen below;
Balance of power- This deals with equal distribution of power within the
arms of the government in a state
Global collective security- This deals with matters that touch on security
world-wide.
Regional collective security- It deals with security with a specified area or
location.
Bipolarism- Deals with distribution of powers of states within the region
or even globally.
New emerging patterns- They help in building nationalism.
Globalism- It deals with placing interests of the world first before those of
the individual nations.
There are various advantages and disadvantages of global government. One of the positive side
is that of sharing ideas equally. The disadvantage is that of unequal treatment of people due to
enemty amongst different groups of people.

Part B
Terrorism is the usage of intentionally violence as the means of creating terror amongst the
masses of population. Modern terrorism differ greatly from the past terrorism because the
modern one uses more sophiscated weapons. Terrorism has different objectives such as morale
building amongst the group and advertising. There are three levels of terrorism namely;
international terrorism, regional terrorism and global terrorism. For instance the suicide
bombings that occurred in Israel is a regional terrorism. This is because the war was fought
between Palestine and Israel. The war occurred in the same region. Some strategies should be
used to deal with crisis. One of the strategy is the use of mediation. The other strategy is the
holding of peace talks amongst the fighting groups or nations. If the strategies are employed,
there will be no war, destruction of property and peace disruption (Townshend, 2018).
Question three
Over the past centuries, the Middle East has been known to be a war zone where the nations
involved fight over issues like cross border conflict, and the shift of ISIS (Gause, 2011). This
question will focus on the impacts of war on global, political, military, and economic status in
Syria.
The war in Syria has brought about several international impacts like; the rise of ISIS, a terrorist
group that has destroyed nations likes France by killing innocent people and disrupting peace.
Millions of refugees ran to Europe for safety after their state was under attack forcing such
countries to accommodate them leading to economic disruption.

WORLD AFFAIRS 5
The Syrian war has an implication on the political state of its country where once where there
was a functioning nation hosting refugees what has remained is a meaningless government with
almost no citizens to support.
Several nations including the United States offered to send its military troupes to Syria to help
with the ongoing civil war alongside other countries but this only led to more conflicts between
the nations. The war has destroyed the economy of Syria and neighboring states (Goldschmidt,
2018).
In conclusion, civil war has several detrimental effects and should be avoided at all costs.
