Executive Summary
Tourism play an important role in shaping the economy of any country. China has also so
many beautiful places and one of them is its second most populated city ‘Sanya’ of Hainan
province. This is a wonderful place that almost attract everyone. However, the increasing
number of visitors in this city creates problem for the Chinese government as the city faces
many tourism issues and degradation of natural resources. However, the Chinese government
is continuously working on various environmental and tourism plans that focuses on
sustainable development. The Chinese government focuses on sustainable development in
tourism and take all the appropriate actions and policies to stop the degradation of
environment. This report helps to understand the various issues and policies of the Chinese
government to protect its tourism industry and provide a beautiful environment for its
tourists.

1. Introduction
Tourism is one of the key industries in the economy of any country and it is applies on China
as well. The role of tourism sector in the inbound economy of China is unavoidable. China
opened it gate in 1980s for the tourists and foreign visitors to collect the foreign currencies
and enhance its foreign exchange. China has emerged one of the leading tourism destinations
in the world as it is developing itself in both inbound and outbound tourism (Chen, Huang,
and Bao, 2016). China is most populous country in the world and it also acquire mass land
which means area wise it is the third largest country in the world while population wise it is
the most populated country in the world. However, this report has been prepared in
consideration with Chinese tourism industry and its beautiful city ‘Sanya’. Sanya is one of
the most beautiful cities of China out of its 23 provinces. Sanya is located in Hainan province
and large number of visitors every year visiting China to see the beauty of Sanya. This report
discusses the characteristics and beauty of Sanya. The report also highlighted the attraction
points of the city with some emerging challenges for Sanya in the future. This report helps
the issues that can affect the tourism in this city and about the possible causes and solution to
avoid these issues.
2. Tourism Destination
Sanya is the second most populate city in the Hainan province and a large number of people
arrive there to see the beauty of the city. The major attraction point of the city is its tropical
weather, beautiful beaches, and the large number of palm trees that increases its beauty for
the foreigners. Sanya is located in the southern coast of Hainan Island province (Sanya-
Tourism-Development-Commission, 2017). However, the Chinese government focuses on
the developing the city as one of the most beautiful cities in the world by restructuring its
beaches and arrange restaurant, hotels, and other facilities for international tourist to see the
beauty of China. Sanya is known as the “second Hawaii” of the country and it almost attract
the people towards its natural beauty and wonderful beaches. The white sand beaches of this
city almost seduce the tourists. The city also includes beautiful bays such as Sanya bay,
Dadonghai and Yalong bay. It can be said that beauty of Sanya almost attract every people
who loves nature and beautiful beaches and people definitely should visited once in lifetime
at Sanya city in China (Meng, Xu, Hu, Zhou, and Wang, 2017).

From last few years, Chinese government spending so much on Sanya city to develop its as
one of the beautiful places in the world and the other reason behind this is that it contributes
significantly in the economy of China (Yilei, 2018). China is looking for sustainable
development in the tourism industry because it further helps the country in the foreign
exchange reserves and it also helps the country in its economic development. People spend
too much money while they visit China and this will further help in collecting foreign
exchange reserves. China is developing the Sanya city as the tourism hub and continuously
large number of hotels and restaurants are opening near the beaches and in the cities for the
foreigners and international tourists (Powell, 2018).
2.1 Attraction Point in Sanya City, China
There are so many beautiful places that directly attract the people towards its beauty. These
attraction points in Sanya city are as follow:
1. End of the world: This is one of the famous places in Sanya, where local people
pronounce it ‘Tian Ya Hai Jiao’ (ZHAO and SUN, 2015). This the most attractive
place in the Sanya where more than thousands of people are visiting every day. It is
located 25 km far away from the Sanya city. This place is famous because of two
huge beautiful rocks. The place resembles the memory of a true love couple who later
suicide. The name of this place is inspired by their name ‘Tian Ya’ and ‘Hai Jiao’. In
the remembrance of these two people, those two huge rocks are showing their true
love and resemble the true love to other people (Marketwire, 2019). This place is
surrounded by the ocean that makes it so beautiful place in the world with the story of
a true love that is connected with this place.

2. Nanshan Temple: The local name of this place in China is Nan San Si. It is known
for the land of Buddhism, while some people known it as the “Mountain of
Luminosity’. This place is located in the south of Sanya. It is 40 km. far away from
the city. Dharma-Door of Nonduality, Longevity valley, Gold and Jade Statues of
Avalokitesvera, Tree houses are some of the attraction point at this temple. However,
the statue of Buddha is the most famous attraction point here because large number of
people visits the city to see it (Li, Goh, and Zhang, 2015).

3. Asian Dragon Bay: In China, people say it ‘Yalong Wan’. This place is located in
the southern region of the Sanya and known for its beautiful beach. It is a half-moon
shape bay, which is so beautiful to watch. It spread in 7.5 km and provides a great
sight of nature. User experiences this beauty in morning and evening time. However,
the tropical ambience, high star hotels, and Seaside Park are the great facilities
available for the visitors in the city.

2.2 Transportation and Accommodation in the Sanya city
Sanya has its own airport that is called Phoenix Airport. People can fly every in the country
from this airport and they can also visit from different location of the China by its domestic
flights. Most of the cities of China such as Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Macau, Guilin and
some other cities are connected with Sanya through Airways route while people can also
travel to Sanya from Haiko from the railways and bus routes. The railway route of the city
connects the Shanghai, Beijing, and Guangzhou from the Sanya city. However, people can
travel from various other means of transportation from one cities to another cites in China
that connected with Sanya city (Haiying, Linsi, Peng, Xiaohong, and Changjiang, 2018).
Apart from this, people can use bus, train, private vehicles, or rental vehicles to visit in the
Sanya city and see the beautiful nature, wonderful beaches, and tropical weather of the city.
Sanya is known for beauty and it accommodation facilities attract very one for revisits in
China to see the beauty of Sanya. There so many beautiful hotels and restaurants are available

nearby the tourism destination where people can afford the hotels in their budget. The
facilities of hotels are like five stars where delicious Chinese and Asian continental foods are
served to the people (Jiuxia and Kaijie, 2016).
3. Impact of Tourism
There are various social, economic, and cultural impact of tourism on China and Sanya city.
Some of them are as follow:
1. Infrastructural development: The Chinese government continuously work on
sustainable tourism development in the country. It has been observed that the
government of China improve the basic facilities near the beach area and other
tourism destination centre (Topchinatravel.com, 2019).
2. Impact on economy: Sanya is one of the famous and beautiful destinations in the
China that is attracting large number of tourists every year. It not only contributes in
the Chinese economy but it also helps the local community people as it provides
employment opportunities to them (Visitourchina.com, 2019). Large number of
people engages themselves in a restaurant or hotels in the Sanya that improvers their
life standard and living style. Ther are more than 7.8 million people visited in 2016
which contributes more than 14.593 billion Yuan. However, the earning is increasing
from tourism is almost 15.25% per year and it is expected to grow with this speed in
upcoming years as well. The tourism industry also added value in service sector
which received 15.46 billion yuan which accounts 62.4% of total GDP in Sanya

3. Increase in Foreign Exchange Reserves: China is collecting more than 96.86
million US dollars every year which is growing 8.92% per year. This amount of
Dollar reserve is collected from more than 192,000 overseas visitors
(Visitourchina.com., 2019). Many people from Russia, USA, South Korea, and
Taiwan comes to Sanya every year and enjoying the nature of Sanya in China. Hong-
Kong is the key market in China where most of the firing reserves have been
generated from the foreign tourists.
4. Generates Income for local Community and People: Income of the people
increases as they sold the local products to the foreigners on high cost prices. In other
words, attractiveness of the place not only provide employment opportunities for
people but it also generates money for the local community as a source of income.

The beauty of the Sanya shows the natural beauty to those people who love the nature
and its beauty.
5. Couple and Romance Destination: This place is also developed as a destination for
couple romance and photo shoot out place. There are large number of people shoot
their wedding photos on the Sanya beaches and enjoy their wonderful times on the
beach.
6. Contribution in Development of Local villages: The Sanya government aims to
collect more than 715 million Yuan to from the Sanya tourism and wants to develop
16 model cultural villages by 2020 that will attract the domestic and overseas people
in future.
4. Issue Analysis
There are several negative impacts of ‘Sanya’ tourism. Too much tourism leads to destruction
of natural resources or over utilisation of natural resources. Somehow, this is dangerous for
the environment for the longer term. Apart from this, the natural disaster in the city is also a
negative impact of tourism on city. Too many tourists can also affect the quality of lie of
local people and community. The over tourism creates burden over the local villages or
people in the Sanya city. The commercialisation of tourism force the government to overuse
the natural resources and even government sometime try to disturb the natural beauty by
human or artificial creations. However, the over utilisation of resources is the major problem
in the city and it should be taken seriously by the Chinese government (Weaver, Kwek, &
Wang, 2017).
However, there are so many environmental programs has been launched by the Chinese
government to improve the tourism industry business. However, the concept of sustainable
tourism development may help the country to develop the city as one of the beautiful
destination for tourism. The Chinese government formulates many strategies and policies to
attract people in the country towards its tourism industry and see the beauty of the country.
The government spend huge amount on its environmental programs to develop its different
destination as an international tourism destination. The reconstruction of beaches (which
were destroyed in the flood) is another major work done by the Chinese government near the
Sanya city (Weaver, et. al., 2015).

The poor architecture of hotels and limited dishes in the restaurant are also some of the major
problems in the Chinese destinations. People who visited from other country in the China is
normally not like to eat local food or may want to eat some other dishes, but it has been
observed that most of the part in China, people served Chinese dishes. Therefore, China is
focusing on tie-up with some other international hotels for developing modern infrastructure
for the tourist near the tourism destinations. Apart from this, it is also focusing on variety of
Asian continental dishes for the people along with local Chinese Dishes.
5. Policy Implications
The Chinese government has taken many steps towards the sustainable tourism development.
The environmental degradation is the major problem for the China because of excessive
tourism. Apart from this, people also play a key role in destruction of overuse of natural
resources.
1. Education to People for reducing the degradation of natural resources
The Chinese government provide education to its local people about the nature and its
importance. Environment is polluted because people are unaware about their actions, thus the
education program of country make them aware about their act and help them to reduce the
degradation of natural resource.
2. Focus on Sustainable tourism development
The tourism development in the country is almost the priority of every country. However, the
sustainable development in the tourism industry by the Chinese government enables the
entire environmental factor to develop and grow without any negative impact on the humans
or natural environment (Lin, Lai, and Zou, 2017).
3. Focus on environmental, social, and economic development
The social and economic development of the tourism destination somewhere necessary and
this can be possible by implementing the proper tourism and hospitality management system
in the city. However, from the last few years China is developing various environmental and
tourism development plan that focuses on sustainable development of tourism so the over
tourism will not affect the nature, culture, or society of the Sanya city (Wen, Xuebin, and
Kun, 2016).

6. Conclusion
In conclusion, after opening the gate for foreign tourists, China is collecting a huge amount of
foreign reserves. However, the Chinese government also focuses on branding the Chinese
tourism in all over the world. The Chinese government is now focusing on Sustainable
development in tourism industry and develop its all the beautiful places as the tourist spots.
Apart from this, these destinations are collecting a huge amount of money from tourism that
further helps in development of that place. ‘Sanya’ is also a beautiful place in China that help
the government in its economic development and provide employment opportunities for the
local community people. The attraction of Sanya, its beautiful beaches, and tropical weather
can ultimately attract any one towards its natural beauty and that is the reason why it is one of
the most beautiful city in China where millions of people visiting every year to watch its
natural beauty.
