Geographical Context
Tasmania is an island state of Australia. It is
situated in most southern area of its mainland. The
State is separated from Australia by 240 km in the
stretch of water named as Bass Strait. The island
processes nearly 315 km from west to east and 296
km from north to south. It is known as the greatest
mountainous island on the earth with a number of
lakes and rivers. The few peaks of Tasmania
exceeds 1500 m. Southern Ocean lies between
Tasmania and Antarctica, due to which the weather
of this island is rapidly changeable. It also contains
high rainfall from place to place. The area of the
island is 68,400 square km. that is 0.89% of total
portion of Australia. Hobart is the capital city of
Tasmania. Mount Ossa is the highest point of the
island with the height of 1617 m. The mountain is
situated in the center of the popular Cradle
Mountain- Lake. Tasmania’s mostly area is thickly
forested where Tasmanian Devil is found. It is the
largest carnivorous marsupial in the world.
International Visitation
During the year ending September 2017, 266500
international visitors stayed in Tasmania that is 17 percent to
228,500 from the last year. International Visitors Styed in
night increased by 33 percent to 4.49 million with 14 percent
increasing in average length of night stay. The expenditure
by international visitors enlarged by 33 percent to $484
million in 2017. The share of Tasmania in international
visitors to Australia has increased by 3.3 percent in
September 2017 that was 3.1 percent in September 2016.
Visitor Origin
Government is focusing towards competitive strength by
Tasmanian Visitor Economy Strategy that attract majority of
tourism in the region. The strategy includes five factors
named as Volume, Expenditure, Employment, Dispersal and
Satisfaction to grow and support the economy. According to
Tasmanian view, visitor origin does not include only number
of tourists but it also contribution of the tourists to the
growth of Tasmanian economy.
Key Attractions
Since Tasmania has the earth's major ranges of dolerite, with
a number of unique mountains and cliffs, it is preferred by
visitors for its unique fauna and flora. Some of the main
places to visit in Tasmania are Port Arthur, Sarah Island,
Gordon River, Gunns Plains Caves, Bruny Island, South
Bruny National Park, Cascade Brewery. The local
government of Tasmania has introduced many annual events
to encourage tourism like food festival named as Taste of
Tasmania, agricultural show of three days, music events and
falls festival. Recently two events named as Mona Foma and
a 10 Days on the Island arts festival has been included in the
calendar of state arts and events.

farm stay. Visitors prefers to stay in farm houses.
They can also go with the option of camping and
caravan because there are more than fifty camping
parks in and outside of the state. In Tasmania, all
kinds of hotels and motels can be found on the basis
of budget of visitors. The visitors who do not want to
stay outside, they can go for hotels with their
available budget. Camping is preferred by the youth
on the other hand peaceful stay in lodges and hotels
are preferred by aged people.
Economic impact on GDP
Tourism development is an important tool for
developing economy of a state. Tasmanian
government also expressed positive view towards
tourism and its related activities. According to data,
56% of public is willing to see advance tourism
progress in the state, while 39% of local people are
previously employed by this. Along with this a

themselves in tourism sector employment. At present
tourism is contributing a sum of $2.3 billion in a
year to the economy of Tasmania. It consists 9% of
the total Gross Domestic Product or Gross State
Product. Tourism sector is providing more than
15000 local jobs to the public in the areas of
transport, hospitality, accommodation, retail,
restaurants, cafes, cultural amenities, bars and pubs
and training. More than 22,500 jobs through
industries sectors such as manufacturing, training
and education, insurance and finance, agriculture,
health and care, fishing and forestry, construction are
also supported by tourism in Tasmania.
Other Important Features
Tasmania’s atmosphere contains many diverse and
ancient landscape that offers strange experiences.
Major part of the state is covered by national park
and world heritage secured wilderness. Mountain
biking, adventures of rafting, journey of the heights
are the main features of tourism in Tasmania.
Tasmania is named as Lonely Planet and in known
as a vastly desirable and highly attractive worldwide
destination. Tasmanian workers won 2014 Qantas
Australian Tourism Awards in 10 categories out of
29and the state is graded in highest four “must see”
places in the world.
