1INTERNET OF THINGS IN MINING
Introduction:
IoT or the Internet of Things is one of the emerging technology which can be used for
different purposes. Along with this it is also possible to apply the IoT technology in the Mining
Industry as well. The major reason which lies behind the implementation of the IoT technology
in the mining industry is because of the various kind of benefits of this technology. It is possible
to apply this in the process of data integration from the increased number of sources which in
turn is associated with enabling the mining industry to make plans for the mines as well as for
the operations which are to be conducted in the future which would be done with an unparalleled
accuracy. Besides this it is also possible to implement the IoT technology for the purpose of
operating the unmanned vehicles and the driverless vehicles in the mines would be operating in
an autonomous way. In today’s world one of the mining giant has been associated with the usage
of the trucks which are unmanned and they are seen to hauling in the iron ore mines of Australia.
Literature review:
Sun, Zhang and Li (2012), have been associated with showing that the usage of the IoT in
the coal mines is associated with meeting the needs related to the tracking and monitoring of the
health diagnosis of the mining equipment and the materials production as well along with the
storage, use, production and many more. Besides this the safety of the coalmines along with the
warnings for the disasters and rescue in times of emergency were also realized by this study. IoT
is associated with raising the mine comprehensive level of automation along with improving the
coal mine safety production as well.
Kaur and Kaur (2017), in the paper have been associated with dividing the elements
present in the mine into four different sections which includes the man, machine rings and the

tubes and has also been associated with devising the system by means of the mine property so as
to make sure that they become unified so as to achieve the best interactions between the things
which interact between the things associated with communication. This is done in order to make
sure that identification of the intelligent mine is achievable along with locating, tracking
management and monitoring of the mines.
Additionally other authors Zhao and Dong (2012), have been associated with providing
an explanation of the practical significance of the usage of the IoT in the mines. Besides this the
authors have also been associated with providing an explanation of the fact that the IoT is
associated with providing a reliable equipment which are having monitoring functions so as to
make sure that all the equipment are associated with concentrating upon the controllable
networks so as to analyze and compare the integrity of the data in an effective manner so as to
have a good prediction related to any kind of failure.
The paper presented by Sharma, Gupta and Sharma (2017), have been associated with
pointing out the fact that the combination of the information perception along with the
transmission of the information, intelligent processing and modern controlling of the technology
and the modern mining technology can be applied for the for the purpose of establishing the
mine IoT coordinative network systems so as to ensure that the safety production of the mines
along with dynamic perceptions of the status related to mine disaster along with the status related
to the equipment health as well as the personnel safety environment so as to make sure to make
sure that there is coordinative management along with control of the personnel as well as the
machinery, equipment and the infrastructure which exists within the network of production under
the environment which is complicated and for having an effective way of solving the problems
which are faced by the mines. This would ensure the safety of the mines and the prevention of

the major disasters.in the mean time depending upon the safety information distribution type
sensing along with the coordinated control of the production process along with the identification
of the safety information so as to process them along with ensuring the on time transmission of
the sensor networks in the heterogeneous space which is seen to be limited.
In the year of 2012 authors name ZHANG, ZHAO and SUN, were associated with the
usage of the IoT for the purpose of researching and implementation of a coal mine real-time
location system. This particular system is associated with overcoming the defects which are
faced because of the old location system which were dependent upon the usage of RFID. The
coal mine attendance can be realized along with realizing the real-time locations in the coal mine
by usage of this system. The results have been associated with depicting the fact that the systems
were extremely low of cost along with being reliable, stable and economic. The accuracy of the
location was seen to be appropriate if the range is within 3 meters. this was not only associated
with providing an basis for the prevention but is also associated with reducing the rate of coal
mine accidents along with improving the efficiency of the emergency rescue along with
evacuation in times of emergency.
Qi, Ji and Li (2013), have been associated with working upon the design for the purpose
of monitoring the entire system in the coal mine which is entirely based upon the IoT and is
associated with putting forth of the usage of the IoT technology so as to have an anti-interference
as well as sensitive and effective mine. In addition to this the complex geographical conditions
are capable of monitoring by means of combining the IoT with the whole equipment along with
making of suitable designs so as to make sure that the work could be done by making use of the
smart machines which would be associated with adding safety to the process of working inside
the mines.

Vermesan and Friess have been associated with demonstrating the usage of the different
IoT innovations in the Mining industry so as to be used by the various M2M Applications along
with being used by the various Indoor Air Quality, applications associated with monitoring of the
temperature, and many more. In addition to all this the report has also been associated with
mentioning about the fact that this type of convergence of microelectronics as well as
micromechanical parts which are seen to be present within a particular sensing device or the
ubiquity of communications, the rise of micro-robotics, along with the customizations which are
generally seen to be have been made possible by usage of the software and this in turn would be
significantly causing a huge change in the manufacturing world.
In the year of 2014 Da Xu, He and Li have been associated with releasing a paper which
consists of the key technologies which are seen to be used by the mining industry for the purpose
of explaining the fact that the embedded sensors and the actuators which are seen to be present in
the machines which are in turn associated with bringing them into the connected world which is
seen to be spreading in a rapid manner. Besides all this software named AdaptFMS which was
seen to be having the capability of exploiting this particular sort of technology. For instance the
remote tank sensors which is responsible for the calculation of the fuel tank level and the data in
this were seen to be pushed live to the software which in turn is associated with allowing the
clients to monitor the fuel supplies in real-time by making use of the systems which are
dependent upon the web. By usage of this technology it is very easy to monitor the fuel
consumption anytime and anywhere.
Besides all this authors Boulter and Hall (2015), were also seen to be associated with
noting the fact that the entire automation technologies such as the IoT were being implemented

into the mining industry for the purpose of improving the efficiency of the production along with
reducing the maintenance cost and reliability improvement.
Lan (2014), have been associated with conducting a survey which was mainly related to
the mentioning o the future developments in the IoT which included the network scalability and
was associated with providing a continuous data stream along with methods which were used for
the purpose of handling the heterogeneous data so as to be used in the industries. Besides this the
recent developments in the IoT for mining would be associated with helping in the prediction of
the downtime along with helping in improving the efficiency as well as helping in
revolutionizing of the safety and catalyzing of the decision making and the automated mines
would be helping in the creation of the real-time as well as multidimensional models which are
used for the purpose of optimization of the layout of the mines, the operations, the paths of the
vehicles and many more.
