1. Introduction:
1.1. Background:
The development of internet technology has increased rapidly in modern and
sophisticated world (Ellison, Steinfield & Lampe, 2007). It not only makes the users benefitted
but also make the students efficient (Kvavik, 2005). Although, it is always a fact of concern that
how the usage of internet has affected or improved the performance of the students, their social
and academic lives (Griffiths et al., 1999).
The current study examines the usage of internet, its benefits and affects among the
college students to classify social, virtual and leisure functions (Metzger, Flanagin & Zwarun,
2003). The study aims to indicate the crucial aspects in the usage of the internet and its usability
in gathering the information available on the academic coursework.

The diagram indicates that the today’s digital ecology significantly influences student’s
learning. Especially, it is very much evident that today’s digital technologies permit students to
share with a wider and more varied audience. Also, it is confirmed that the internet enhances
learning by connecting students to resource about topics of interest. Not only that, today’s digital
technologies would encourage higher collaboration within students.

internet usage are creativity, social-group development, problematic internet usage, health &
functioning as well as risk of benefit assessment.

1.2. Research Questions:
The following research study has a common research question-
“What are the main problems that the internet can cause for the Fujairah Women’s College
(FWC)?”
1.3. Research Hypothesis:
The research hypotheses are-
Null hypothesis (H0): The main purpose of internet usage and amount of internet usage
(frequency of internet usage and daily time elapsed in internet) are not associated (independent)
to each other.
Alternative hypothesis (H0): The main purpose of internet usage and amount of internet usage
(frequency of internet usage and daily time elapsed in internet) are associated (dependent) to
each other.

The data is collected by the questionnaire survey method. The questions of the questions
are simple and closed-ended. The collected data is primary in nature. The major variables of the
research study are- frequency of internet usage, levels of daily internet usage and main purpose
of the internet usage. The study is trying to get some new findings and inherent truths about
internet usage. Therefore, the research is exploratory in nature.
The target population is 25 in size. The data is qualitative in nature. The data variables
are mainly categorical (nominal or ordinal). Mainly descriptive statistics is executed in this
analysis. Besides, the Chi-square tests are carried out to test the hypothesis.
3. Results:
3.1. Descriptive Statistics:
Out of the selected students, 36% are females and 64% are males.
The age of the sampled students ranges from 20 to 25 with the average 22.6 (SD = 1.756) (Oja,
1983).
A significant amount of 52% students uses internet every day and 28% students use internet
several times a week. Only 12% students access internet once a week and 8% students do not use
internet.

Only 8% students never spend time on internet. 84% students spend more than 5 hours on
internet.
32% students use internet for entertainment and 24% students use internet for online shopping
with highest frequency. Only 8% students use internet for acquiring information.
A significant amount of 72% internet users are either teenagers or adults. Very few percentage of
students are children (16%) or parents (12%).
A significant percentage of 36% students denied that internet allowed the users to spend more
time with their friends than their family.

A significant percentage of 40% students consider that they are more connected with the students
who prefer to share their hobbies and activities. 28% students prefer to share their religion.
The anxiety of failure of internet during the exam is positive (48%) and negative (32%). Most of
the students think that internet helps students in a good way at FWC with 56% agreeableness.
48% students deny whereas 32% students accept that books are nicer to use than websites. 52%
students consider that using internet would enable students to accomplish tasks more quickly.
40% students responded that they use social media in the class and 36% students denied that.
3.2. Chi-square test:

The p-value (0.172) is greater than 5%. Hence, the accepted hypothesis is accepted (Moore,
1976). Therefore, the frequency of access of internet usage has no significant association with
the purpose of internet usage.
3.2.2. Test 2:
The p-value (0.437) is greater than 5%. Hence, the null hypothesis is accepted. Therefore, the
amount of internet usage in a day has no significant association with the purpose of internet
usage.

4. Discussion:
The study concludes that the time spend in using internet and level of using internet in a
day has no influence on the types of purpose of internet usage. Although, they are involved in
entertainment and social website with internet rather than main educational purpose. The
addiction of internet usage is high among the teenagers for un-educational purposes. The internet
is significantly used in sharing religion which is the major concern. Students are worried about
probable interruption of internet at the time of exam. Although, internet is helping students in
good ways at FWM being nicer than websites. Internet is beneficial for accomplishing quick
tasks also. However, they have significant habit of using social media in the class. Such type of
behaviour could hamper the main objective of launch of internet for educational purpose in
Fujairah Women’s college.
