Quinn et al. (2015) presents a survey tool that provides an appropriate measure for the profile of
a manger. The tool is essential in helping managers understand their areas of strength and areas
that require to be worked on. My results from the survey (Competing Values Framework Survey)
indicate one quadrant with strengths, two quadrants with weaknesses and the last quadrant is
split between a strength and a weakness.
My main strengths are centered on mentorship and facilitation roles in the strengths quadrant and
innovation role in the split quadrant. Innovation plays an important role in tourism and
hospitality especially considering the diversity in expectation from the clients that necessitates
development of packages that are accommodative and attractive (Ki-Joon & Choong-Ki, 2015).
In my area of work in hospitality, coming up with new ideas forms a key part in ensuring
customer retention. In terms of mentorship, I am always eager to pass on knowledge to interns
and new employees to ensure that they have fast start, which is important for them as well as for
the organization. Managers that facilitate operations allows for the smooth running of activities
in any organization, making it a significant trait for managers (Weaver & Lawton, 2014). From
the weaknesses quadrants and the split quadrant, I clearly lack in leadership skills and would
require improving on my coordination, directing, monitoring and producer roles.
The survey and results reveal that my approaches to management are Group Behavior and
Contingency approaches, which are based on team work, individual and collective mindset as
well as innovative problem solving. Improving on my leadership roles will significantly boost
my career development.
