‘The Intouchables’ is a well-known French film about the development of a strange
comradeship in between two men who are inherently very different from each other. Driss,
who was unemployed was employed by Philippe, a quadriplegic man as a full time help. This
film is a captivating piece that throws light on the bond of friendship in between these two
people, the joy it brings and the struggle of life that remains throughout people’s lives. In this
paper I will explore the storyline of the film along with the themes it portrays to understand
the essence of the story.
The film was released on September 23, 2011 and is directed by Oliver Nakache and
Eric Toledano based on an original documentary ‘A La Vie, a La Mort’ which told the story
of a man who became a quadriplegic after an accident while paragliding. With this incident in
the background, the film explores the relationship shared by the man with his caregiver Abdel
Sellou, who was called Driss onscreen. The caregiver’s relationship with Philippe is beautiful
on screen. They speed down highways and smoke Marijuana. Driss becomes an integral part
of his life and family. Driss is played by the stunning Omar Sy and Francois Cluzet plays
Philippe.
Caregiving is often considered formal work in society but the movie dives into their lives to
explore the informal edge in their relationship. As the title suggests, these very different men
are seen as outsiders in the society because of Driss’s rough past where he was involved in a
bank robbery and Philippe’s handicap. Society is harsh to those who need love the most and
this explores the root of their friendship. They both realize what it is like, being an outsider in
the society.
The class difference in between them is very apparent since the beginning since Drill feels
out of place in the lavish French home which was pleasantly different and luxurious than this
shabby place that was full of children. Many are of the idea that Driss, a black man is

portrayed as an ex-con from the projects. Servile roles are often done by people of colour
however, on watching the film it is evident that Driss is shown in a light that admires him for
who he is in actuality. In brings in multicultural aspects in the world of French films but does
not explore racism and Driss along those lines.
Men are stereotyped as beings who are not as advanced as women when it comes to caring
but this film shatters those notions as the Driss is the epitome of care and love for Phillippe.
He is willing to take care of the man who gave him a new lease of life. He is understanding,
patient and willing to help Philippe in every way possible. He even takes him paragliding
though it was the cause of Philippe’s handicap. The love in between men and the modern day
‘bromance’ is explored in a very beautiful light.
On Driss’s trial period within the live-in career he had landed, he discovers the fine arts
though his friend. He does the same for Philippe who is introduced to the world of boogie and
dance. Both of them easily open up to each other as they find solace in each other’s company.
When Philippe talks to Driss about the epistolary relationship he had with a woman, Driss is
openly supportive and urges him to meet her. Separation does not suit Philippe well but Driss
makes sure that he lives a better life as he secretly plans a date for him with Eleonore, the
woman Philippe has so wanted.
‘The Intouchables’ is a film that is known for the subtle portrayal of the beauty of
friendships. Despite their apparent differences, two men find solace in each other to provide
the viewers with the message that people are so much more than what they seem. It is a
touching tale that earned a place amongst the films at the tops because of the happiness it
shows and imparts.
