INTRODUCTION TO PROJECT MANAGEMENT

MANAGEMENT 1
Solution 1) Project management can be defined as the discipline of implementing specific
practices to manage all aspects of a project, from teams to tasks to tools in a complex
business environment. The roots of project management are transforming due to
globalisation, however, the evolution of this discipline started 1000 years back since ancient
times through the 18th century (Haughey, 2014). The evolution of project management can be
seen in four periods – prior to 1958 (starting from the great pyramid of Giza where managers
undertake some degree of planning, execution and control in managing the project to
development of Gantt Chart that shows different phases of a project), 1958 – 1979
(Introduction of CPM and PERT project management tools), 1980 – 1994 (computer and
project management systems with increasing popularity of the internet) and 1995 – present
(Globalisation, complex project management software managed by diverse teams).
Solution 2) The one things that surprised me about the project management field is its
diversity and linkage in different areas. For instance, project management roots are connected
with varieties of positions and practices such as leading a team, using the technology to come
up with new solutions, problem solving for the business strategic decisions, communication
with different team members, working with other people on the project, introducing new
things to execute designated projects effectively and efficiently, streamlining with the various
departments, budget consideration and many more. It shows that project management is not
an isolated consideration and to successfully accomplish and achieve the project, is it
important for project managers to complete it on time, budget and technical specifications.
