The Nursing Future: Advancing Health, Leading Change
The title of the report is "The Future of Nursing: Advancing Health, Leading Change" offers the
knowledge regarding the role of nurses in current dynamic health care system. The report is a
combination of different recommendations for changing the different practices of nursing and the
higher levels of training and education, which could be attained by imparting efficient education
system. The report also said that the transformation of nursing practices should be done to the
leadership of nursing.
The impact of the IOM report on nursing education
IOM report effects the nursing education in larger extent. It suggests various new changes which
are necessary to follow for every healthcare institution. The report suggests an all-BSN
workforce at the entry level. All this is helpful in building a more uniform foundation for new
care models that prove beneficial in reforming the prevailing healthcare system (Garner, 2013).
The report of IOM warned that if the prevailing system of nursing did not transform, it would not
be able to fulfil the new technologies, growing demands and the population of ageing which are
prevailing due to the different reforms of the health system. The prevailing healthcare system
significantly changes after the introduction of Affordable Care Act, 2010. With the help of this
act, health care system able to takes a leap from the healthcare or hospital-centric model to the
family-patient centric model. In such type of environment, the healthcare systems mainly focus
on the chronic and preventive care management treatment, instead of episodic hospitalizations. It
can be said that the most aspects of the healthcare system move into the public health settings
and the communities, and there is a need for different physicians who have the efficient
knowledge and various skills in different fields of nursing. Therefore, it can be said that there are

a high requirement of training to nurses to deliver quality patient care services. The introduction
of different recommendations and suggestions will improve the ability of nursing's to fulfil the
needed requirements and challenges of collaborative healthcare system delivery. Those nurses
who have high nursing knowledge will be instrumental in the formulation of policies and their
implementations which help in minimizing the existing gaps in the system of healthcare delivery.
The impact of the IOM report on nursing practice
IOM suggests various changes which influences the existing practices of the healthcare
institutions in a significant manner. It gives freedom to healthcare organizations to choose their
practices. Furthermore, the freedom in choosing practices enhance different opportunities and
also helps in achieving the different objectives of the IOM report (The Future of Nursing: Focus
on Scope of Practice, 2011). In addition, the committee who is engaged in developing the report
also consider obstacles faced by the nurses during performing their job such as the legal
problems that prevent them in the utilization of advanced practices or imparting efficient training
and education to others. It was considered that these barriers should be necessary to remove
because there is a high requirement for removing these barriers. The nurses can deliver the
efficient services with the help of their scientific knowledge, adaptive capacity and experience.
The committee said that the nurses play an efficient role in health promotion and the prevention
of dangerous diseases by recognizing them at early stages. The advance practice registered
nurses also deliver their services with the help of physicians like evaluating the tests and
measuring the conditions of patients. Apart from these services, most of the nurses are also
engaged in imparting the services like nutrition, social work, and physical therapy.
Apart of this, report of IOM also provides them various opportunities to grow in their career.

and they should come up with the different creative ways to improve the system of health care
and make the world a very good place.
The impact of the IOM report on the nurse’s role as a leader.
IOM report gives various recommendations with which the nurses can efficiently play role of a
leader. By adopting the leader role the nurses can significantly improve the existing environment
of nursing and can provide better health care services. However, a study that measured the level
to which the employers of the healthcare system have implemented the recommendations of the
IOM was reported. According to this study approximate 80 percent institutions were preferred
nurses with the degree of bachelor's. Furthermore, approximate 93 percent of facilities provide
some reimbursement of tuition to complete a BSN

nurses to earn the BSN within a framing time period, and only 8 percent of them provided

more educated staff members. For fulfilling this purpose, they need to develop strict policies
regarding the wages and degree completion. It can be said that the report suggested the nursing
community to continue to work together. Thus, the task should perform with the collaboration of
other stakeholders so that changes in healthcare system can implement in the desired manner to
provide quality care.
