The impact of the IOM report on nursing practice
IOM suggests various changes which influences the existing practices of the healthcare
institutions in a significant manner. It gives freedom to healthcare organizations to choose their
practices. Furthermore, the freedom in choosing practices enhance different opportunities and
also helps in achieving the different objectives of the IOM report (The Future of Nursing: Focus
on Scope of Practice, 2011). In addition, the committee who is engaged in developing the report
also consider obstacles faced by the nurses during performing their job such as the legal
problems that prevent them in the utilization of advanced practices or imparting efficient training
and education to others. It was considered that these barriers should be necessary to remove
because there is a high requirement for removing these barriers. The nurses can deliver the
efficient services with the help of their scientific knowledge, adaptive capacity and experience.
The committee said that the nurses play an efficient role in health promotion and the prevention
of dangerous diseases by recognizing them at early stages. The advance practice registered
nurses also deliver their services with the help of physicians like evaluating the tests and
measuring the conditions of patients. Apart from these services, most of the nurses are also
engaged in imparting the services like nutrition, social work, and physical therapy.

to which the employers of the healthcare system have implemented the recommendations of the
IOM was reported. According to this study approximate 80 percent institutions were preferred
nurses with the degree of bachelor's. Furthermore, approximate 93 percent of facilities provide
some reimbursement of tuition to complete a BSN
