Nursing is a significantly broad field with a variety of aspects which include but not
limited to treatment, disease prevention and management, patient care, and health campaign. As
a broad area, it is bound to have its fair share of challenges. In that regard, the Institute of
Medicine (IOM) and the Robert Wood Johnson (RWJF) formed a program to assess and make
recommendations for the future of nursing. This paper seeks to shed light on the role of RWJF
initiative and the IOM report, including a review of State-Based Action Coalitions, state action
initiatives, and challenges.
The RWJF initiative core mission was to generate a report with recommendations for a
more action-based design for the nursing profession. The committee’s role was examining the
capacity of the broad nursing workforce to meet the demands of a more reformed health care
approach. The committee looked into the capacity of nursing education, healthcare setting, and
the delivery of health care services (National Academies, 2018). By making changes in
institutions and public policies at different levels of the government, the committee

that note, the coalitions play significant roles in making sure the quality of health care is
considerably high. Precisely, their actions help in the implementation of the recommendations of
the IOM report thereby ensuring nurses commit to provision of quality care to the entire
American population.

2019). The move continuously helps nurses to be in preparation for the complexities and
diversities of nursing profession.
To conclude, although the state has been profiting from the IOM program,
recommendations, and state-based action coalitions, there are barriers to advancement that
currently exist. Firstly, a section of the key state stakeholders fails to work collaboratively. A
significant number of health care advancements call for equal participation for the realization of
positive results thereby posing great challenges to state health care delivery (The National
Academic Press, 2016, p. 39). Luckily, the nursing advocates have stepped forth to help remedy
