AI Summary
This report provides a comprehensive review of the journal article "Internet of Things (IoT) Communication Protocols" by Al-Sarawi et al. The article explores the fundamental concepts of IoT, defining it as the connection of physical objects to computer networks and devices, enabling data exchange. The review highlights the discussion of various communication protocols, with a focus on wireless networks like IPv6, Zigbee, and cellular networks, emphasizing their flexibility and reliability. The report critiques the article's examination of communication technologies for IoT applications, differentiating between low power wide area networks and short range networks. The critique also examines the research methodologies, including qualitative research design and data collection methods, used to analyze the IoT technology. The review acknowledges the importance of communication protocols in the IoT, particularly for long-distance and M2M communication, and highlights the significance of the research in providing insights into the performance and application of different protocols.

Internet of Things (IoT) Communication Protocols: Review
Summary of article
This journal paper was written by Shadi Al-Sarawi1, Mohammed Anbar, Kamal Alieyan, and
Mahmood Alzubaidi in the year 2017 [1]. This research paper is completely based on the internet
of thing and communication protocols used in information technology. The key purpose of this
paper is to review the internet of thing and describe communication protocols used in IoT. This
research study also compares the communication protocols and other information technologies
with each other. According to the authors, the term IoT is defined as the internet of thing that
connects physical thing with computer networks and devices. Such kind of information
technology consists of smart devices which link with each other by using internet connectivity. It
has the potential for exchanging data or information from one device to another.
Critique of article
According to the authors, IoT is one of the advanced communication technology which is used in
numerous fields such as transportation, industry, social gaming, smart city and so on. In this
journal paper, the researchers discussed the fundamental concept of the internet of thing and
discussed types of communication protocols [1]. Mainly, IoT uses wireless networks for
communication purpose because they are more flexible and reliable rather than wired networks.
The researcher argued that in this generation there are various kinds of wireless protocols
developed and implemented such as IPv6, Zigbee, Bluetooth, over low power wireless area
networks and many more [2]. The use of IoT is growing rapidly and many consumers use this
technology for communicating with computer devices and transferring data from one location to
another. Moreover, the authors also examined the various communication technologies for IoT
application and reviewed the IoT IP coverage. The researchers identified that there are major two
kinds of communication protocols used on the internet of thing for example low power wide area
network and short range networks.
A cellular network is one of the best protocols which require low power and it can be used for
long distance communication. It is identified that the main drawback of the cellular network is
that it cannot be used for local network communication [3]. Mainly, it is used in mobile

communication and IoT uses this protocol for exchanging data from one device to another. In
order to improve the effectiveness of the paper the researchers adopted several research
methodologies, for example, qualitative research design, data collection methods, data analyzing
approach, research strategies and many more.
The aim of these methodologies is to provide in-depth analysis about the internet of thing
technology and improve the quality of investigation. The researchers used a qualitative research
design which allows theoretical facts and information about the research topic [4]. A secondary
kind of data collection technique used by the authors and the statistical analysis process is used
in order to analyze the viewpoints of other authors. Moreover, the authors also included the
viewpoints of other researchers and critically reviewed their results and findings.
From this paper, it has found that the IoT is an effective communication technology that connects
physical things with networks and devices. The authors identified that for long distance
communication cellular protocols are sufficient but it cannot be utilized for M2M
communication. Moreover, ZigBee is a low power communication protocol that has the ability
for sending and receiving data with low power and improves performance of communication.
This paper shows the importance of communication protocols on the internet of thing and also
compared common communication protocols used in IoT. The researchers used various criteria
for finding an effective communication protocol which includes power range, network, and
cryptography and so on. The researchers provided complete information about IoT and
communication and also reduce the drawbacks of previous studies.
Opinions
According to my opinions, the researchers critically reviewed various kinds of communication
protocols and analyzed the importance of protocols on the internet of thing. The researcher did
not conduct any literature review which creates a gap between information and research topic. In
future, this paper will help consumers for gaining their knowledge in communication technology
and protocols. Moreover, it is the best article for improving the performance of the system
because researchers suggested protocols as per the applications.
