IOTDEVICES AT HOME
Introduction:
In this new digital world IoT devices are playing much vital role in order to make this
happen successfully. Every activity is being automated, more advanced, more accurate, and in
easy and quick manner (Gubbi et al., 2013). Most of the devices acts on the principle of sensors
to detect any change in the environment and based on that triggers notification. In order to make
these topics transparent, twelve devices had been choses that can be used within the dwelling in
this report that could be helpful in living with for ease and comfort. This report also focuses on
the risks that could arise due to application of these devices including security, privacy, usage,
connectivity, and control issues. IoT devices have become trending nowadays because of its
application and controls as, it could help in completing any work automatically in smart way and
the devices could be controlled using a mobile application that are compatible with all the mobile
devices and can be operated from anywhere via connecting to the internet.

device options to the consumers. This device is presented in the market through focusing on
taking the fashion experience to the next level (Mozzami et al., 2016). This device has basic use
cases like home monitoring and baby monitoring that pushes notification on the mobile
whenever there is change in the environment through machine learning (Perumal, Datta &
Bonnet, 2015).
Wemo mini: WiFi smart plug: This is a new mini version of the smartplug line up being
updated by the Wemo in their latest update, which allows the users to stack two smart plugs in a
single outlet. All the features of this device are same as the features launched in its earlier
version regarding of the fact that it is smaller in size and is also very sleek. It could be a great
starter device for the smart home and a progress in the smart plugs market. It can also be helpful
in valuing the Amazon echo or Google Home in coolest way.
June Intelligent Oven: The features embedded in this device are: built in digital scale,
digital temperature probes, and a camera that can recognize the food engine which can replace
the current ovens that are being used manually. This device can be correct replacement for the
present oven in the market and it aims to be "more efficient than your conventional oven, more
precise than your toaster oven, and way more intelligent than either."
LG SmartThinQ: The SmartThinQ line of connected devices or appliances has been
divided by LG into categories for many sectors in the house hold like firstly, safety that includes
a safety robot monitors with video streaming embedded inside the vacuum. Secondly, the kitchen
that includes refrigerators and ranges, thirdly it focuses on living that includes dryers, washers,
air conditioners and robotic vacuums (Perumal et al., 2016). The best part in these devices is that
they all can be operated with the smartphone app presented by the LG.

integrated with Schlage Bluetooth enabled smart deadbolt that can be integrated with the iOS
devices and can only be unlocked with those devices. This includes other feature that includes
connectivity with the similar smart locking systems that could be enabled with security systems
and alarm systems. It could change the way of locking doors or any door manually.
SkyBell HD WI-Fi Video Door Bell: A new trend in the doorbell technology that can
record at 1080p resolution with enhanced camera quality and also provides online storage for the
videos that has been recorded during individuals rang the bell. It provides features to stream
video of the individual ranging bell on the smartphone. Nest, IFTTT, and Alexa have been
integrated into its system in order to make it more efficient and better working (Sivaraman et al.,
2015).
Neato Botvac Connected Robot Vacuum: It is another device that can be used within the
dwelling in manner to clean the floors and any other surface clean automatically. It has the best
performance than the similar devices of other companies and can be controlled remotely via a
smartphone application using any mobile device. This will eliminate the human effort that was
earlier being made to clean the house and keep the flat neat and clean through just a command
send by the smartphone (Stankovic, 2014).
SmartThings: A life changing technology that can automate each appliance and allows
user to control the devices or appliances with just smart phone application commands that are
incompatible with any mobile device. It is not a wireless technology but embedded with the
communication hubs and other features of this device is that it is compatible with the ZigBee, Z-
Wave, protocols including IP-accessible devices.

Lowe’s Iris: The revolutionary technology in the field of IoT that is an advanced and
evolved version of the home security appliances that could help in household security and
monitor the activities with the devices (Tozlu et al., 2012). The device is embedded with the
monitoring system that can monitor the water level which is being performed by the ‘smart
sprinkler system’ including its basic function to push notification or raise alarm when something
in the environment changes. This are the basic facilities that Lowe provides to the user and in
advanced premium version it can provide cloud storage, video streaming and many more
facilities including ivee sleek voice control and push notification services.
Grid Connect Connectsense: It is a revolutionary product in the market of the sensor
devices that enable the facility to get notifications about the environment changing in the home
via ConnectSense light applications connected to the Wi-Fi (Yoon, Park & Yoo, 2015).
Canary: This device compares the difference between the normal activity and the
abnormal activity within the dwelling and sends notification to the user and also embedded with
the HD recording that can record the changes that is being happened within the house. It is a
smart home security device with HD Video recording facility.

devices, which is the reason each IoT device is being embedded with the smartphone application
control that ultimately enhance the interaction of the individuals with the smartphones
(Choudhary & Muralidharan, 2014). Many health and mental problems related to stress are the
causes of being addictive to such IoT devices and smartphones or mobile devices. In order to

make it applicable for all the sectors, there should be proper infrastructure for the networking
connections as all the devices work on either Wi-Fi or uses internet to work (Borgohain, Kumar
& Sanyal, 2015).
Control Issues
The process of working is much complex for all the IoT devices, which leads to several
control issues like an individual must be learnt about the options that he is going to select. An
individual who is not aware with proper using the technology and options will not be able to do
the work he wants to do (Yoshigoe et al., 2015). Another issue related to the control is that it
could give control access to the unauthorized user through breaching the network. This is called
cyber-attack, which is the top most issue over all the issues as cyber-attack leads to all the issues
that are stated in this report.
Connectivity Issues
The devices have does not have any boundary limit due to the access through the internet
but there should be limited connectivity that enables the exchange of information between the
user and the devices only (Borgia, 2014). These devices need proper connectivity, which is not
yet available in the rural areas that imply that the individuals living in the rural areas cannot get
access to these devices. I an ideal environment there should be exchange of information between
the device itself and the user operating the device, but on the other side data is being collected by
the product providers in the name of the Big Data in order to track the behavior of the individual

Security Issues
The root of the security issues on the application of these devices can be stated as the
cyber-attacks that could led to the expose and manipulation of the data that is being stored on the
network in manner to enhance the performance of the devices. Storing the information and the
data on the cloud or in the internet makes this information vulnerable to such unwanted
activities. There are several examples of the real world how the stored data can be exposed or
manipulated by an unwanted and unauthorized user.
Privacy issues
The devices that work on the application of collecting personal information could lead to
several privacy issues. The organization that are providing with these innovative technologies are
in real collecting the personal information of the individuals in manner to enhance the efficiency
of the Big Data. The Big Data efficiency will no doubt increase but it will cost the privacy of the
individuals that are using IoT devices in the real world.
Solution to the Raised Issues
The issues that are raised in the above paragraphs cannot be eliminated completely but it
can be minimized to the level of extent. Related to the privacy issues, before buying any IoT
device an individual should check all the statements mentioned in the agreement before buying
that product (Chien, 2017). Another solution regarding the stated issues could be proper
regulations and laws should be implemented in order to create boundaries for the types of data
that are being collected by the organization for the purpose of the Big Data. Regarding the usage
issue and connectivity issues government should make efforts to provide connectivity to the rural
areas in manner to let the individuals connected to the network and take the benefits of these
