The Internet of Things (IoT) is the term which refers to the ever-growing network of physical objects with
embedded sensors which can connect together via the internet allowing communication to occur
between these objects and many other Internet-enabled devices and systems.
The IoT is quickly becoming a necessary aspect of people’s daily lives. Physical items can now sense and
collect data which can be controlled through digital and smart technology. The IoT extends internet
connectivity beyond traditional devices like desktop and laptop computers, smartphones and tablets to a
diverse range of devices that can utilise embedded technology such as security systems, thermostats,
cars, electronic appliances, lights, medical equipment etc. These devices, often called "connected" or
"smart" devices, can talk to other related devices (machine-to-machine (M2M) communication) and act
on the information they get from one another.
Along with the many benefits there is also considerable concern over the IoT which must be overcome in
order to harness the power of this free flow of information. This unit will enable students to explore the
benefits of the IoT, the potential future developments, the most pressing challenges and how to
overcome them.
Tasks
As a member of Research and Development department, you have been assigned a mini-project to find
out the impact of IoT including benefit, potential future development as well as challenges to implement
IoT and how to tackle them.
You need to do primary research (both qualitative and quantitative research) and secondary research to
find out that impact and conduct a report for your research. Even it’s a mini-project, you must apply
project management (PM) techniques such as project charter with aims, objectives, cost etc. As for time
management, you need to produce WBS and Gantt chart with reasonable tasks and time. A project
logbook is required to provide evidence of the project development process and ongoing reflection for
every week. This logbook will be needed later for your reflection and evaluation in Assignment 2. As part

of QA (quality assurance) policy, in the report you also need to critically evaluate the PM process and
appropriate research methodologies applied.
Your report must have an introduction stating the project aims and objectives. This must be followed by
a copy of your project management plan. Your plan should show the milestones when you will review
with your tutor your ongoing progress so far. You will submit your logbook which shows how you have
carried out the project.

Introduction:
As a member of the R&D department, we were assigned a small project to understand the impact
of IoT including benefits, future growth potential as well as challenges for IoT implementation and how to
solve them.
The scenario we chose is about IoT in the auto industry, specifically the "connected cars" system. The
first part we will introduce this system, how it works and its features. We will then divide the work and
create a project management plan covering the aspects of cost, scope, time, quality, communication, risk
and resources. In this section we will dive into everything that is important to creating the best
management plan. In the third part, we will create the work breakdown structure and Gantt Chart to
provide the timeframe and stages for completion, all of which will be detailed in this report. And in the last
part, we will do small-scale research by applying qualitative research methods (create questionnaire forms
for 20 people) they will give their own opinions and based on that. We will figure out how to solve them, in
the appropriate quantification to meet the goals and objectives of the project

Project management is the process of leading the work of a team to achieve goals and meet
success criteria at a specified time. The primary challenge of project management is to achieve all
of the project goals within the given constraints. This information is usually described in project
documentation, created at the beginning of the development process. The primary constraints
are scope, time, budget. The secondary challenge is to optimize the allocation of necessary inputs
and apply them to meet pre-defined objectives.
The objective of project management is to produce a complete project which complies with the
client's objectives. In many cases the objective of project management is also to shape or reform
the client's brief to feasibly address the client's objectives. Once the client's objectives are clearly
established, they should influence all decisions made by other people involved in the project – for
example project managers, designers, contractors and sub-contractors. Ill-defined or too tightly
prescribed project management objectives are detrimental to decision making.

Software project management is a collection of work done by a team (may have different expertise,
different work, different project time) to achieve a result. as scheduled, in the scheduled time, with a
projected budget. In the terminology of Software Engineering, Software Project Management is the
activities in planning, monitoring and controlling project resources (e.g., budget, people), execution

Initiation:
The project initiation phase is the first stage of turning an abstract idea into a meaningful goal. In this
stage, you need to develop a business case and define the project on a broad level. In order to do that, you
have to determine the need for the project and create a project charter.
The project charter is an important document consisting of details like the project constraints, goals,
appointment of the project manager, budget, expected timeline, etc.
Planning:
The project planning stage requires complete diligence as it lays out the project’s roadmap. Unless you
are using a modern project management methodology like agile project management, the second phase of
project management is expected to take almost half of the entire project’s timespan.
In this phase, the primary tasks are identifying technical requirements, developing a detailed project
schedule, creating a communication plan, and setting up goals/deliverables.
Project execution:
The project execution stage is where your team does the actual work. As a project manager, your job is
to establish efficient workflows and carefully monitor the progress of your team.

Another responsibility of the project manager during this phase is to consistently maintain effective
collaboration between project stakeholders. This ensures that everyone stays on the same page and the
project runs smoothly without any issues.
You can take help from collaboration software available in the market. They’ll not only make your life
easier but also improves efficiency and increase the productivity of your team.
Project monitoring and controlling
In the project management process, the third and fourth phases are not sequential in nature. This
phase runs simultaneously with project execution, thereby ensures that objectives and project deliverables
are met.
As a project manager, you can make sure that no one deviates from the original plan by establishing Critical
Success Factors (CSF) and Key Performance Indicators (KPI).
During the monitoring phase of project management, the manager is also responsible for quantitatively
tracking the effort and cost during the process. This tracking not only ensures that the project remains
within the budget but also is important for future projects.\
Project closing:
This is the final phase of the project management process. The project closure stage indicates the end
of the project after the final delivery. There are times when external talent is hired specifically for the
project on contract. Terminating these contracts and completing the necessary paperwork is also the
responsibility of the project manager.

Introduction:
With an annual production of more than 70 million units, the automobile sector is one of the biggest
manufacturing industries in the world. According to an international estimate, the global turnover of the
automobile industry in 2017 was an astonishing 3 trillion dollars, amounting to a combined global GDP of
3.65%.
However, the total number of annual sales in automotive units is somewhat fixed since 2016. Yearly car
sales have been wavering between the range of 75 to 80 million units for the past four years. One of the
reasons due to which the automotive industry is unable to make a breakthrough in its annual production
and sales record is due to the lack of innovative features in vehicles. Buyers nowadays look for more than 4
tires and a steering wheel in a car. They seek for a futuristic vehicle with which they can connect and
interact. Internet of Things is one such disruptive technology that is helping automobile sector to build a
batch of next-generation vehicles.
The advent of IoT in automotive industry has opened new avenues for carmakers and buyers all across
the world. With usage at both industrial and commercial level, IoT in automotive sector has become a
prominent hotspot for variegated multi-purpose applications. From connected cars to automated transport
systems, the applications of Internet of Things have made a deep dent in the global automotive market.

Connected cars are part of IoT, a phrase used to refer to the days when consumer goods are
connected to the internet with the goal of making life easier.
A connected car is a vehicle that has its own connection to the internet, usually via a wireless local
area network (WLAN) that allows the vehicle to share internet access and data with other devices inside
and outside the vehicle.
Connected cars don’t only connect with people and services – they can also connect with each
other and the road network’s infrastructure. These attributes will become more important as self-driving
cars appear.
Connected cars facilitate fast transmission of data and increase drivers’ response time through
enhanced vehicle communication. Based on the vehicle’s connection with different objects, the CV2X is
sub-divided into four categories:

Vehicle to vehicle (V2V): V2V connection allows vehicles in a proximate range to share data with
each other. The data mainly constitutes information related to location, speed, and dynamics. V2V
connection helps in preventing accidents and allow emergency vehicles like ambulances and fire
trucks to easily move through traffic.
Vehicle to infrastructure (V2I): V2I connection refers to a network of vehicles and road
infrastructures. The infrastructure in V2I generally constitutes traffic lights, lane markings, and toll
booths. V2I generally facilitates smooth traffic flow and avoid long queues at toll booths or petrol
pumps.
Vehicle to pedestrians (V2P): Through the use of a mobile application, a pedestrian can also connect
with CV2X network. A pedestrian can use this application to locate nearby taxis and monitor the
estimated time of arrival for transits. They can also connect with the pedestrian walking system and
change traffic signals to cross a road.
Vehicle to network (V2N): Intelligent Transport System (ITM) and weather forecast department can
also connect with the network to alert the drivers about change in weather conditions or an
accident on the road. Moreover, a vehicle can be connected with smartphones. This way, the driver
can use voice commands to operate the music system and GPS of the car while driving.
