1. Introduction
IoT or the Internet of Things can be defined as the various links via any computing
device, which could be embedded with physical objects. These physical objects are used
daily to successfully enable the data for the purpose of sending or receiving it (Jin et al.,
2014). The complete network of each and every physical device, home appliance for
embedding with the help of software or sensors is called the Internet of Things. The users use
these objects to properly connect and exchange the data.
1.1. IoT Smart City
1.1.1. Background
Smart city can be defined as the specific urban area, which eventually utilizes various
kinds of sensors for the purpose of data collection electronically for supplying the
confidential information (Petrolo, Loscri & Mitton, 2014). This information is utilized for
managing the various resources or assets effectively and efficiently. This data could be
collected from several devices, citizens as well as assets, being monitored or managed.
1.1.2. Features of Smart City
The particular area of managing any city technologically is known as the smart city.
There are various examples of this smart city. The most significant example in this domain of
Internet of Things is the smart parking meter. This is one of the major applications of smart
city, which is utilized by the car drivers to search for their parking space that is available for
them (Arasteh et al., 2016). This helps to reduce the hassle of searching for parking spaces in
all over the city. The specific smart parking meter provides the ability in enabling the mode
of digital payment. The main advantage of this feature is that there is less chance of people
running out of cash.

The second significant feature of the smart city is the smart traffic management. This
is utilized in helping to stop all the traffic congestion with the help of optimization of the
streetlights to successfully prevent all the roads from becoming absolutely congested. There
are various problems in rush hours (Arasteh et al., 2016). The citizens of the smart city are
extremely benefitted from this application.
The third important facet of the smart city is the smart traffic transit. The fact that the
user is satisfied with the public transportation is ensured with this feature. The requirement of
the users is fulfilled by this.
1.1.3. Issues or Challenges in IoT Smart City
Transportation, power plants, waste management, information systems, law
enforcement and many other sectors are made advanced within the smart city (Theodoridis,
Mylonas & Chatzigiannakis, 2013). This is the perfect integration of various physical objects
and ICT or information and communication technology. In spite of having such advantages,
smart city does comprise of several issues or challenges. Digital disruption is the major
challenge in this application. The users could be in grave danger due to this type of
disruption. Sensory overloading is the next challenge here. It reduces the development of the
city (Petrolo, Loscri & Mitton, 2014). Constant connection to the Internet is yet another
problem of smart city. The application is completely dependent on the Internet connectivity.
These issues should be mitigated effective immediately.
