Background: The Internet of Things can be defined as the significant network of
several physical devices, electronics, sensors, actuators as well as connectivity of items,
vehicles that comprise of the things for the purpose of connection and exchange of
confidential data. This type of connection is effective for the proper creation of opportunities
to directly integrate the physical world with the computerized systems (Theodoridis, Mylonas
& Chatzigiannakis, 2013). The efficiency of the machines is well improvised due to this and
the human exertions are reduced to a great extent. According to a survey, about 60% of the
total population in the world would be acquiring Internet of Things technology in the year of
2030. The IoT in smart city is responsible for the rapid urban growth and development for
giving excess strain on the existing infrastructure.
There are several important and beneficial applications of Internet of Things
technology that provide advantages to the smart cities. These applications have brought
innovation for enhancing the services, reduction of expenses and then improving the
interactions and communications. The most important and significant applications of IoT
technology that are useful for the smart cities are efficient water supply connection,
innovative solution for the traffic congestion, reliable and trustworthy public transportations,
improvised public safety, energy efficient buildings, better monitoring of health services and
many others (Jin, Gubbi, Marusic & Palaniswami, 2014). All of the above mentioned
applications of Internet of Things technology easily improve the quality of the residents’ life
styles and make the city more innovative and connective.

Although, there are various benefits of IoT in smart cities, few of the security risks are
also present for this technology, which make it extremely vulnerable for the residents.
However, these issues could be promptly resolved with the help of prevention techniques.
The following research report outlines a brief description on the entire concept of IoT smart
city with its several applications. Moreover, the probable issues as well as the preventive
measures of IoT smart city applications are also given here.
