CCTV camera has been extremely useful for maintaining security of households, shops and
organizations for a long time. Introduction of IP surveillance camera has further enhanced the
security of this technology. This report focused on the use of IP surveillance camera and their
benefits. There has been discussion on the performance and design issues of the camera. The
technical overview of the camera has been evaluated. Further the future scope and socio technical
aspects of the camera have been analyzed. Lastly, the report concludes with the overview of the
whole report.

IP SURVEILLANCE CAMERA
Introduction:
IP surveillance camera is used to record video footage or images which are viewed through
closed circuit televisions through an IP network. It is the digitized version of old CCTV [2]. With the
growing number of security issues all over the world, use of IP camera has increased significantly in
recent times. This research aims to discuss about the use of IP surveillance camera and the
advantages of its usage. There will be discussion about the problem and configuration issues of this
camera. Further, the future scope of this camera will be highlighted along with an evaluation on its
advantages and disadvantages.
Discussions:
Background of the discussion:
Using IP surveillance helps the user in monitoring a recording audio and video through a LAN
or internet service [3]. It is basically used for information transportation. Implementing digitalized
version, the IP camera increases controlling and managing live as well as video. This improves the
security system as it increases the quality of the images, reduces costing, add scalability and
flexibility [1]. With the use of internet in this technology, the use of human resource for maintaining
security has reduced.
Technical overview of IP surveillance camera:
This camera is basically regarded as combining a camera and computer in a same design.
Implementing IP based network, helps the network find the best way for transferring traffic to the
preferred destination at real time and changes it in suitable destinations. This helps in survival in
case of any link failure as it can change to a different direction. Using IP, various products or
equipments from different vendors can work in the same network. This reduces cost and timing of
the whole process. IP allocates the services in accordance with priority so that it does not affect the
optimizations. This decreases drop or losing packet, error in network and so on.
Performance and configuration issues:
There are number of issues related to IP camera. They are discussed below:
In low light, the performance of the camera is lower which creates a lot of problems.
Since, the IP system depends on network connections, so in case of any network failure, the
performance will be hampered.

Due to the fact that, IP camera uses packets for data transmission, so video signals are
hampered by occasional delays. This can vary from 10 to 20 seconds of magnitudes.
A proper knowledge and adequate planning is required while installing an IP surveillance
camera. Any error in the design can lead to poor performance or delay of the data.
It requires greater storage space compared to other CCTV camera versions.
The costing and setup of the IP camera is higher than any other CCTV cameras [5]. Security
issues and availability of IP camera:
There are a number of security issues related to IP camera. They are as follows:
Since, the whole system is operated through internet network, so there are always risk
associated with hacking and tampering of the network.
The front end design of the IP camera is quite insecure. In general security principles, the
user is not allowed for accessing any program on a remote location before total
authentication process is completed. In IP camera principle is not maintained, since the
operations happen in real time.
The CGI or common gateway interface of the camera is quite insecure [4]. The web interface
implements CGI and communicated with CGI scripts and programs. It is found that CGI
scripts are not secure and are prone to cyber attacks.
Future scope of IP surveillance camera:
There are huge future scopes related to IP surveillance camera. With increase in use of
internet all over the world, this camera should reach every organizations and households which
requires enhancing their security system [6]. Numbers of advanced technology are being developed
to increase strength in network security, which can decrease any threat of hacking related to IP
camera network. There is a need to develop the whole design of the IP surveillance camera for
better facilities and this will increase further use of the camera. The costing of implementing the
camera should be reduced so that more number of people can get the facility to use this
technology.
Socio-technical aspects of IP surveillance camera:
Social use of CCTV camera has increased considerably in recent years. The high costing of the
camera has resulted in limited use of this technology. It is mainly used in large scale and medium
scale companies and yet to gain popularity among households for its high costing. The technical
aspects for installing the camera are quite complicated and it requires strong knowledge about the
whole process before implementing [8]. Real time footage of the video can help the users to a great

extent in maintaining security of their home or organizations. The resolutions of the images are
extremely high which helps in proper recognition of faces. The main problem in this aspect is that
the light of the room needs to on brighter side for better picture quality [7]. Implementation of the
camera requires less cable wire and even for better facilities wireless network are being used in
recent time. There is a need to improve internet connections everywhere in the world so that the
working of the camera do not get interrupted and serve the users the best quality service for
maintaining their house or office security.
Conclusions:
IP surveillance camera is the latest technology to enhance the security system for houses,
shops and organizations. In an increasing rate of criminal activities, strong CCTV footage is extremely
necessary to identify the criminals. IP camera provides the latest security system. The problems with
design, implementation and costing should be minimized so that every user gets the maximum
benefits. This report highlighted about the use of IP camera and the benefits associated with it.
There have been discussions on performance and camera. The future and socio technical aspect of
the camera are discussed further.
