process it to give useful information. It can be classified on the
basis of size, storage and purpose.

CLASSIFICATION OF COMPUTERS AND THEIR
APPLICATIONS
• Super – As the name suggest these computers are most
powerful and can access large amount of data and
information in quick time (Eason, 2014). it can perform
trillions of mathematical calculations within micro seconds
• Mainframe- these computers are less powerful than super
as they store and process millions of data set in order to
provide useful information. Usually, they are used in
processing bulk data related to statistics, census, consumer
data, etc.

• Mini – These computers were developed in 1960’s. they
are less capable than mainframe. A mini computer is used
to create link between mainframe and micro (Silverstone,
2017). Universities, state government, etc. uses these
computers.
• Micro – They are known as personal computers (PC) or
desktop that is used for individual purpose. It is affordable
to people and includes one CPU, mouse, etc. and other
input and output devices.

Classification on basis of purpose:-
• Embedded computers – Apart from above, there are some computers which are designed for
specific purpose. They are only used to perform particular functions. In this a microchip is
installed in devices like camera, music player, etc.
• Robots – They are also computing devices and is controlled by another person. Robots are
integrated with AI to perform monotonous and complex tasks (Booth, 2014). Many companies
are highly using robots in their operations. They are designed to perform activities like
welding, riveting, etc.
