This session mainly entailed the motivation to improve and get more interested in IT
related works. There was a detailed information about the importance and role of IT in an
organization. This includes improved services, faster action on tasks, reduced expenses,
increased performance by the organization and many more just to mention a few. It was put to
notice that IT is an integral part in any organization and it is of great significance that IT roles
should be given more priority. Connections is another area that has great importance in building
a career in IT. Knowing people from various fields not only in IT can make individuals have a
prosperous career since the market for the individual will greatly increase.
Communication is a significant tool in any organization and without it many functions
will fail and hence the objective of the organization not met. Communication should be
improved between workers and this can be made so by providing platforms for communication
in the organization. Information from the management to the employees will reach them in time
and any action required will be acted upon and if there is any feedback, it will reach the
management in time.
Continuous learning and development is essential in developing ones career in IT. More
knowledge will provide an individual with competence advantage hence giving them an upper
hand in securing jobs.
Session 2 – ‘Never mind the robots… Soft skills are key to your career success!’
Technical skills are relevant in any IT field. Competence is every student’s desire but this
bring them to forget some important features of any career, and this is soft skills. A student may

have all the skills and impeccable knowledge in IT but without soft skills it is impossible to work
effectively with people. It will be like working with a robot that has not feelings whatsoever.
These soft skills are what makes a person behavior. Having ethical principles and being able to
relate with people is what differentiates a person with a robot and that is what is referred to as
soft skills. In today’s world these soft skills have become significant in the sense that an
operation cannot execute successfully if these soft skills are lacking.
Understanding people’s problems which is also referred to as empathy, is very important
in working environment. This will make one have reasonable judgement in whatever case that
may arise. Other aspects like self-management, interpersonal relationships and leadership skills
are also significant for a career success. Self- management requires one to have humility, critical
thinking, time management and resilience just to mention a few. Interpersonal relationships
involve the behavior of an individual in a group of people. This may include teamwork,
communication and empathy. For leadership, conflict resolution, decision making and problem
solving must come in handy for any successful organization. By maintaining these soft skills,
there will be a market rise hence improved sales, employee satisfaction hence great work output,
improved customer satisfaction and many other advantageous effects to one’s career and the
organization as a whole.
Session 3 – ‘How to pass your next IT job interview’
Interviews are very stressful since they require one to explain their reason for applying in
a company or organization. There is a lot of anxiety and confusion when asked certain questions.
Explaining why one chose that company and issues like expected salary can really put someone
in an interview in an awkward situation since one does not know the expected answers from the
interviewers.

One thing to have when attending any interview is confidence. This can be
brought about by doing a background check for a company that one has been asked to go for an
interview. The prior knowledge of the company’s information will provide one with information
that might be relevant in the interview.
Other things to do before the interview is provide necessary documents before the
interview starts. This will provide the interviewer a chance to check if what you are saying is
correct. Provide information about your strong and weak areas in your field. The interviewer will
be able to gauge your competence from that. However, one should completely avoid clichés.
Obvious comments and remarks must be completely avoided since they provide an impression of
commonness and last but not least, one should be dressed accordingly for creating a good
impression to the interviewers.
