1STORY WRITING
Title of the story: “It happens and will always happen”
Jim Chaucer was a manager of a company in Australia who believed in simple living and high
thinking. Chaucer was a person who was not only a businessman, but also a painter and a
performer artist. The most outstanding quality of Chaucer was that, in spite of being a family
man who earned a good amount of salary, he and his family were never flamboyant or a “show
off” in the society. Chaucer had a decent and a supporting wife who took great care of him as
well as her profession. Mrs. Chaucer was a journalist in an Australian news channel. The family
was well balanced and amicably interdependent on each other. Chaucer and his wife lived in a
two storayed building near Queensland and were happy and content with their disposition. Never
did they ever think of being overambitious which would lead to degeneration and disintegration
of their family values and ethics. However, lesser did they know that with the arrival of a tiny
new member in their family, instead of being blessed, they would happen to fall in a great
trouble.
Mrs. Chaucer was suffering from dizziness and vomiting unnecessarily. She went to the doctor
only to find out that she was pregnant for three months. Mrs. Chaucer had no other choice rather
than being happy. Nevertheless, Mrs. Chaucer did have big dreams such as travelling the whole
world with her husband when both of them were young, opening a coffee bar and maintaining it
alone by becoming an upcoming entrepreneur, enrolling into hiking, trekking and
mountaineering classes to live the life to the fullest and enjoy each and every precious moment
she, or “they” have got from the almighty. Everything seemed to be a broken dream, a nightmare
for Mrs. Chaucer. Even though she was an upcoming mother, she did not comply by the social
norms. She was unhappy. She was poignantly unhappy as she could visualize that her “bucket
list” of enjoying life and executing certain activities seemed to be a broken dream and the child

within her womb seemed to be a “nightmare” for her. Surprisingly, she was disheartened. She
could not make out how she became pregnant because she used to be very careful.
Chaucer, on the other hand, had already started to dream big when the news of her wife being
pregnant was conveyed to him by one of his aunt. He was naturally overexcited and overjoyed
regarding the fact that he would turn into a proud father of a little child. As he was contemplating
and speculating the joyous and complete life he would be experiencing by having his beloved
wife beside him with a little kid in between them on his lap, little did he know that all good
things come to an end. Destiny played a nasty trick with Chaucer which nobody could have
imagined; the catastrophe in Chaucer’s family and love life was about to happen shortly.
Chaucer’s wife had been going through ill health lately when she was six months pregnant.
Doctor had told her repeatedly to take care of herself. She was prescribed of practicing pre-natal
yoga poses, eat six meals a day and have adequate sleep whenever necessary. The doctors
repeatedly told her not to skip meals or yoga. However, Mrs. Chaucer had been reluctant towards
maintaining her health. She had to take sabbatical from her work due to her pregnancy which
made her depressed and desolate. Chaucer could not understand the psyche of Mrs. Chaucer. For
Mrs. Chaucer, her profession was less profession and more of a hobby for her. She felt relaxed
and positively charged up whenever she was in office working on any article. The full-time
homemaker role did not suit Mrs. Chaucer though she knew how to juggle with work and family.
Psychiatrists told her to remain engaged at home which she did but still felt overwhelmingly
depressed. Maybe, this was the sign of hormonal disbalance or pre-natal depression which made
her existential. Chaucer’s wife’s continuous skipping of meals made her weak and when the day
of giving birth arrived, she was admitted to the best hospital where she underwent complications

3STORY WRITING
in labor room and by giving birth to a daughter, eventually succumbed to her complications and
breathed her last.
Chaucer was completely shattered with his wife’s death and he wished to die with her as well.
His actions were justified because it was Mrs. Chaucer who took care of the house after getting
completely de-energized from her workplace. It was Mrs. Chaucer who ate little and gave most
of the food to her husband in order to satisfy his overrated hunger. It was Mrs. Chaucer who
adjusted with any and every kind of situation even though she was sometimes mentally and
psychologically abused by her mother-in-law when she visited their house. It was Mrs. Chaucer
herself who took all the blame on her shoulder when her in-laws complained of their family
matters and issues. She also hid her illness from Chaucer in order to keep him out of any kind of
“headache”. Seriously, a woman and her life, happiness and illness are all “headache” for a man.
Every time Chaucer and his wife became intimate with each other, Chaucer pestered her to have
a baby. Mrs. Chaucer had dreams, big dreams of becoming successful in her career, earn a lot of
money, go for world tour, join a hiking and trekking society, live the life to the fullest. It was
Chaucer who was concerned about his family “lineage” which doomed the life of the poor dead
woman.
Chaucer went back home, alone, desolate and homeless. While roaming around his wife’s room,
he saw her diary. He read it, where his wife had written, if they had a daughter, she would live
her own life on her terms and not to please others. Chaucer realized his mistake and was
determined to make his daughter a complete and independent woman who would have a mind
and a dream of her own and who would stand out of the crowd by living her life only and only
on her terms, whims and emotions.
