Smart Home Technology
Introduction
This report is based on demonstrating academic and professional skills development for the
science and technology field. In this context, an ability of researching and writing a well-
structured report will be demonstrated while developing an argument. To do so, a new
technology is going to be introduced by this research which is emerging in the info
technology field. The technology which will be covered within this report is ‘smart home
technology’, whose impacts over future job skills required by IT university graduated will be
discussed. Finally, this report will provide useful recommendations for the entire university
sector so that IT students can be well prepared for having desired employability skills in the
context of their bright future.
Background Information
The modern world has experienced a tremendous growth within telecom technology over the
last century 1. In this way, a multitude of innovative applications of the Info and
Communication Technologies has been emerged and evolved the way people live, play,
work, interact and even imagine 2. In this context, IT has produced a lot of impetus within so
many spheres which considerably affect our lives for good. The background literature and
information research suggests that Internet of Things (IoT) and Machine-to-Machine (M2M)
communication are those IT innovations which are leading a new world of potentials and
opportunities. Therefore, Smart Home Technology (referred as SHT) is an evident from the
huge number of M2M and IoT enabled nodes which have been created for the chosen sector

Findings and Discussion
This research has found the Smart Home as an aggregation of each and every need of the
people living there when they are inside as well as when they are not present inside. Here,
automatic remote control, surveillance, security, as well as remote monitoring of premises
counting sick, young, elderly people, these are all the modern requirements of the millennial
users 4. Hence, the research has found that for meeting such requirements, integration at an

Application level as well as scalability at the cloud level is majorly required 5. Subsequently,
SHT is the resulted innovation in order to fulfil the above modern requirements of the new
users.
Description of the technology
SHT is an innovation for an effective planning and management within modern municipal
services 1. In this context, SHT was originally introduced in the country Norway around 10
years ago. After its invention, several municipalities have taken advantage of SHT within
residential homes as well as nursing care centres since its onset. In other words, SHT is a
complete term for ICT as utilized in homes, where several components are inter-connected
through a local network 6. This research’s findings are suggesting that selected technology is
typically used for monitoring, warning and carrying out various daily life functions as per the
users’ requirements. In addition, SHT makes the automated communication with the
surrounding environ as much as possible, by using internet, or mobile phone 7.
The impact of this new technology
In this context, there might have some measurable and significant impacts of this chosen
technology on prospective job skills needed by IT university graduates. These impacts are as
follows:
 One of the major impacts on future employability skills required by the IT university
graduates will be enhanced quality of the services and the high-tech workplaces.
 In addition, advanced IT technologies like SHT, will unlock so many future
opportunities in the area of research for the IT university graduates 8.
 This technology will be creating so many vacancies for the IT engineers, technocrats,
and IT managers as the SHT is going to exploit the entire field of IoT and M2M
technologies.
 Universities will be requiring more intellectual and technology oriented graduate
minds so that more inventions in the field of SHT and smart cities can be created 4.

Challenges for smart home applications
While finding the usefulness as well as future contributions of the SHT, this research has also
found so many important challenges which all are requiring addressing for an effective
implementation of the SHT everywhere:
 Marketing concerns like trader competitions and software reliability 9.

 Device connectivity concerns
 Healthcare concerns 2.
 Energy consumption concerns 8.
 Security and privacy concerns

Conclusion
After conducting a detailed research over SHT, it has been concluded that this technology as
an IT technology has tremendous potential, when seeing to the future of energy production

and consumption. Moreover, as a result of this research it has been observed that present
consumers’ confidence is very low in implementing SHT, because of safety as well as
security risks are appearing to be increased. Hence, this paper is summarizing that it is time to
be smart from the perspective of smart cities and homes through designing and emerging
efficient systems for future smart homes. In addition to that, this report has also identified
some major challenges related to the future implementation of SHT everywhere. Thus, future
IT graduates, managers and engineers will require being more preventative, proactive, and
hence adopt multi-stakeholder approach for addressing those IoT security challenges.
In this way, this paper has successfully described the SHT in detail while covering all of its
important aspects such as uses, challenges, impacts, risks as well as future opportunities.
Finally, after identifying the impacts of SHT for the increasing job skills required by IT
university graduates the report is providing some useful recommendations for the student’s,
energy companies, technological hubs and IT companies in order to ensure a better
technology enabled world.
Useful Recommendations for Future
There are some recommendations for the future university sector about how IT students can
be best prepared to have job ready skills for an industry dominated by new technologies as
follows:
 While implementing the SHTs into the real world, universities need to train their
graduate students for working over the risks and challenges of the new technologies.
 Universities should guide, train and prepare their students for the upcoming
challenges while implementing the newly made technological inventions such as
robotics, automation, AI, and smart home technologies for making the world smart.
 Universities can introduce innovative technologies based modules into their syllabus
while making them compulsory for getting grades. The above practice will enhance
graduate student’s job skills for their career development.
 Universities should include many creative activities, seminars, tasks and academic
activities based on new technologies to make their students interested into these
innovative M2M technologies.

 Universities should invite senior guest professors, intellectual IT experts, IT
companies CEO, and techno experts from all across the world in order to make their
students acquire precious knowledge and job skills from global IT experts.
