LEADERSHIP 1
Ita Buttrose is an Australian journalist and the Chairperson ABC organisation. She was born
in Potts point, Australia. Ita’s father used to work in The Daily Mirror, Sydney; she also spent
5 years in New York as her father used to work as the correspondent in The Daily Mirror
New York. She got married when she was 21 to an Architect named Alasdiar Macdonald and
has 2 children. At the age 23 she was appointed as the women editor of the telegraph.
Buttrose was chosen as the founding editor of Australian women’s magazine. She has also
published nine books which also includes her autobiography, and is also been recognised as
an actor. Ita is also known for raising the standards of journalism in Australia and is
considered as the chair of the ABC (Australian broadcasting company) (Buttrose, 2012).
There are various leadership approaches followed by leading business men and women
around the globe. The leadership approach adopted by Ita Buttrose is the transformational
style which says the collaboration as a team is the key requirement for implementing any
kind of change in the organisation. The transformational approach is headed with the
inspirational environment to work in teams for the accomplishment of the objectives or the
goals of the company. The achievement of the same is acquired by establishing examples at
the higher or the executive level in the company. Basically transformational leaders focus on
how to create work culture in the company by motivating the existing employees in various
manners so that they can work their best to achieve the desired goals and objectives of the
company. The transformational leadership style aims at the betterment of the employees of
the company by providing them training to enhance their skills and motivating them to work
hard by maintaining the healthy competition among the employees of the company (Western,
2019). The points considered by the Buttrose in the transformational approach says that, the
employees should be rewarded time to time to keep the motivation level high as the
incentives and the pay plays an important role for employees and this actually inspires them
to work more hard to achieve their personal targets or the goals as working on the same

eventually benefits both the organisation as well the employees of the company. In the
transformational approach the employees are also trained to focus more on the organisational
interest rather than keeping all their focus limited to the individual interest which is just an
advantage for them and not the whole organisation. On the other hand, the transformational
approach is more concerned with soft skills which help to maintain the long term
sustainability of the company by implementing the skills required for the same in the long
term duration it also helps to gain the employees trust in reflection to the working
environment of the organisation (Kossek, 2018). Certain characteristics found in the Buttrose
leadership include good leadership qualities, clear vision of goals of the organisation,
decisive action, modest and humble behaviour promoting the positive environment in the
company for the better work performance.
The evidences that actually prove the leadership approach followed by Ita Buttrose include
the standards set by Ita Buttrose which says the employees must try to gain the trust and
confidence and must have a clear vision towards the goals of the organisation, which can
benefit the organisation in numerous ways. Also considering the needs of the employees
Buttrose implemented several leadership policies which were formed to benefit the both
employees and the organisation by fulfilling long term goals (Silva, 2019).
Various challenges faced by Ita Buttrose as a leader involves the leading change in the
company which became a challenge for her because leading isn’t tough, but the acceptance of
the same becomes a hindrance in settling down with the employees of the organisation
(Buttrose, n.d.). In the same way, Ita Buttrose also had to face these challenges as before her
becoming the ABC chair other candidates were also considered for the same position but
eventually Ita was placed. To overcome the challenge of leading change, Ita created a better
working environment for the employees of the company considering the fulfilment of their
personal interest along the organisational interest (David R. Caruso, 2018). Also motivating

employees in different ways plays an important role to establish the leading change required
for the company (Patricia M. Flynn, 2017). The transformational approach of leadership in
itself focuses mainly on how to inspire the employees by building the soft skills that are
required for the purpose of target achievement. Another key challenge faced by Ita Buttrose
as a leader was the lack of confidence during the setbacks which is very important to
maintain to overcome any type adverse situation or the circumstance (Paul Barton, 2014). Ita
Buttrose was quite under confident at certain circumstances in her life called as the setbacks.
The circumstance that describes the setbacks she faced was the initial un-acceptance Ita’s
leadership in the organisation. She believed that to overcome any kind of challenge as a
leader is to believe on yourself and to find out what are the possible ways to get out of the
challenge. However, it’s quite tough to actually implement it at the moment, perhaps the
leader is responsible to back up the employees and to motivate them to take that as a
challenge and work hard to prove the skills that they have and use it as a weapon (Harrison,
2017).
The other way to handle the challenge of the leading change could be to lead the change by
managing the same in a certain way in which the employees are under control and also at the
same time satisfied with the handling of the change (Mandy Flint, 2015). The primary
concern of a leader is to lead the team of the organisation in such a manner to get the same
best of their skills along with their satisfaction towards the job they perform for their
organisation. The other way to handle the key challenge which is to back up confidence
during the setbacks, and to use it as an opportunity to help the employees grow and develop
their minds for the adverse situations. As the leader has to lead the whole force of the
organisation accordingly, leader has to motivate the employees and help to overcome the
same by asking them to take it as an opportunity to get better and also ensuring the

betterment of the organisation with completion of goals, as it is the responsibility of the
leader (Chemers, 2014).
The lesson learned from the leadership of Ita Buttrose is to never stop learning also
considering to take risks because doing so will eventually help you to learn more and will
provide with greater opportunities to develop and to adopt a kind of leadership pattern in
which the employees are not hesitated to ask for something because this will mark the
success of leadership. One of the leadership of Ita Buttrose involves the optimism towards
every challenges and opportunities of life. The leader is responsible to lead the organisation
and at the same time the employee should also be satisfied with the leader. A leader should be
flexible according to the demand of the situation or the circumstances, as being confined or
limited to the type of procedures adopted will ultimately not make anyone successful at every
situation because the business lifecycle is a dynamic process. Ita Buttrose also said that the
human resources of the firm should be given high priority as they are the most valuable asset
of the firm. As mentioned earlier Ita Buttrose was extremely concerned about the satisfaction
of the employees because it is directly related to the productivity of the firm, employees who
aren’t satisfied with the work or the environment in which they are working consequently
becomes the hindrance for the organisation (Buttrose, 2011). The lesson also includes that
leadership should not be restricted to extents of orders or commands, because the actual
leadership means understanding of the employees with leader and the goals of the
organisation to get the best results without disappointing any of the parties involved in the
process. The transformational approach itself is about having the skilled and knowledgeable
persons around you who are ready to make a change in real. As a lesson from Ita Buttrose it
is said that the minute you stop learning is the moment you stop moving forward with your
ambitions. In order to retain success for the long term purpose one should always continue
the process of learning says the personal experience of the Ita Buttrose.

organisation a complete new level in the Australian market as the reasons mentioned above
provide enough evidences to support the leadership approach of Ita Buttrose.
