Recommendation/Plan of Action
Preferred Alternative
The owner and the General Manager of House, Hearth and Home, Mark Coglin should
follow the alternative 3. It was evident to Coglin that Wesley Simpson , the yard manager of the
farm lacked the leadership qualities and did not possesses the capabilities of being an efficient
yard manager of the firm . On the other hand, the assistant yard manager Dan Boyd possessed all
the leadership qualities and attributes of managing the yard, which was evident from the
improvement in the performance of the overall company. Considering this situation, the best
option for Coglin would be to promote Dan Boyd as the manager of the yard and appoint
Simpson as the lead of the operations department, where he will not have deal with customers,
giving due respect to his loyalty and service to the company .
Situational Analysis and Problem Statement
The name of the organization is House Hearth and Home and the main characters are
Mark Coglin, General manager and owner of the company, Wesley Simpson ,Yard Manger, Dan
Boyd, Assistance Yard Manager and Brody Graham ,the customer . In order to address and solve
the problem statement, Mark Coglin should promote Dan Boyd as the manger of the yard and
appoint Simpson as the lead of the operations department. This decision would allow Dan Boyd
to have more control over the operations of the yard and help the company to improve their
relationship with customers and gain an advantage over the competitors. Wesley Simpson will
also be able to pay a key role in the operations department of the company considering his long-
term association with the company.

Rejection of Other Alternatives
The alternative 1 is rejected because it emphasizes on bringing no change to the
organizational structure of House, Hearth and Home. Considering the present and future
competitiveness, it is necessary to change the organizational structure of the company and make
Dan Boyd as the manager of the yard to unleash the full potential of Dan Boyd for the betterment
of the company and gaining competitive edge, considering the efficient leadership qualities of
Dan Boyd and also to avoid any conflict in the organization .
The alternative 2, which includes creation of two teams with separate mangers and hiring
a consultant for restructuring, is also rejected. This alternative is rejected because
implementation of it would require additional cost of hiring a consultant and creation of two
teams is a time-consuming affair. Considering the growing competitiveness in the industry, it
would not be a wise decision to make any further investment and go through a change in the
organizational structure.
