INTRODUCTION
The provided report is based on Jack Stores which is part of TESCO that is discount
stores founded management of respective organisation for dealing and bidding extensive
competition occurring at United Kingdom market (Costa and Lowery, 2016). TESCO is highly
renowned and leading retail outlets at UK market. For maintaining their business standards at
national level, it came with new and innovative thought of discount stores for consumers. The
purpose of given assignment is to cover overview of motivation along with significant for
business. It has also covered two different motivation theories that helps organisation to motivate
and encourage their working force at their new outlets to enhance profit margins and sales.
MAIN BODY
Motivation and its importance
It is defined as desires, drivers, wants, needs within individuals. This is referred as
procedure to stimulate people to perform actions in order to accomplish set goal and objectives.
Motivation is driving elements that assist people to perform work as per need and requirements
of organisation (Hagger and Chatzisarantis, 2016). Business working at global level helps in
motivating employees to rise productivity and profitability of organisation. As business takes
initiatives to fulfils need and demand of working force which helps in building trust within
themselves and staff become loyal and trustworthy towards organisation. This leads to resource
capitalisation and capabilities to attain set outcomes in given time period. Thus, it is manager's
responsibility to motivate their employees for accomplishment of their goal as well as objectives
in given period of time.
Theories of Motivation
TESCO is regarded as leading organisation in retail sector that has covered domestic
market within given time period. Here, top management of TESCO organisation has came across
competitive rivalry in retail sector. This resulted into threat of positioning of respective
organisation at UK market. The rise in competitive leads consumers to go for companies such as
ALDI and LIDL due to low prices or discounts charged by them for products as well as services.
After going through such phase, TESCO's management has decided to set up Jack Stores
at discount in future aspects. This is regarded as discounted store that will be founded at market
of UK to increase sales and deal with competitors like LIDL and ALDI that is already dealing to

provide discounted price goods and service to clients. Along with this, TESCO should be ensure
that staff working at Jack that is new stores are highly motivated to enhance profits margin and
revenue and remain high position in both global and local market. Therefore, this is possible by
choosing best motivation theories to develop motivation within employees to accomplish set goal
and objectives in stipulated time period. Thus, TESCO has applied two motivation theories such
as Maslow's Hierarchy Need and Adam's Equity theory for new employees working at new
outlet i.e. Jack. They are described below:
Maslow's Need Hierarchy Theory
This is referred as most significant and used theory of motivation that helps in focusing
needs of staffs in pyramid form (Kearney, 2018). Here, main aim is to fulfils basic need of
people on first priority and then move towards higher stages of needs. This theory of motivation
has used by management of TESCO for their outlet named as Jack Store to provide satisfaction
to their working employees in appropriate manner. It assist employees to use their capabilities
and knowledge for achievement of business goal as well as objectives in positive way. The
respective theory has divided need of people into five categories that are discussed in context of
Jack Store. They are mentioned below:
Physiological Needs- This is defined as basic needs of people like food, clothes, shelter,
education and so on for surviving at market (The Needs Theory: Motivating Employees with
Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, 2020). It is significant need of people living in society or working
in organisation.
Safety and Security Needs- It is defined as needs that focus on providing individual with
good health, security, protection from harm and others. Employees performing work at Jack
Stores should be given with job security, safe working environments and so on.
Social Needs- Such needs belong to acceptance of human beings in terms of friends,
family, relatives and so on. As employees perform work at organisation so they should be
provided with comfort and safe place to achieve business objectives.
Esteem Needs- For performing work at organisation, employees should be given respect,
self-esteem so that they feel motivated towards business. Each and every working force has to be
respected so that motivation can be created within themselves for better performance.

Self- Actualisation Needs- This types of need arises after fulfilment of all above needs.
It is defined as need which helps in describing need of people for reaching full potential. In this
individual has to realise or judge own-self to fulfils their dreams.
The main advantages of such theory is that it is easy for understanding, applicable to all
fields. Similarly, on other hand, disadvantages includes difficulty in measurements and
difference in culture (Nurmi and et. al., 2016).
Adam's Equity Theory
This is important theory applied by business across nation for enhancing morale of their
employees in proper manner for achievement of goal and objectives. It works with the motive to
provide equal treatment to their employees working in an organisation (Wouters and Van
Oostendorp, 2017). TESCO has to ensure that inputs of working force (number of working
hours, commitment level) should be equals to outputs (performance, reward, bonus and so on).
The respective organisation should be ensure about that their employees are motivated each
times and make an efforts to reach to new heights. Such theory required joint efforts of all staff
to beat with competitors in respective segments.
The main advantages includes reduction of exploitation, maintaining relationship and
disadvantages includes difference in perception of people and so on.
CONCLUSION
The report summarised that motivation plays active part in achieving goal as well as
objectives of business. This is considered by each kind of organisation for boosting morale of
staff to rise level of productivity as well as profitability. The various types of motivation theories
are applied by business like Maslow's Need theory, Adam's Equity theory for their working force
in order to make them to work according to regulation of organisation for positive outcomes.
