Introduction:
The aim of the study was to identify the leader’s communication abilities and discuss how good
communication skills supports transformational leadership abilities and why we see these leaders as a
model for leadership communication (Mencl, Wefald & van Ittersum, 2016). Some core
communication skills of leaders are- analyzing the audience, good reading and writing skills,
emotional intelligence and the ability to communicate with diverse audience. These skills help them
influence their audience and connect with them.
Profile of the Leader:
Janine Allis is the founder of boost juices and she is leading businessperson from Australia
(Muenjohn et al., 2018). She started the business from her home and now boost has a franchise in
around 13 countries. She started working at the age of 17 for an advertising agency. In one of the
interviews, Janine said that more than education could teach her, her traveling experience taught her
many things problem-solving. She has won many awards for her leadership qualities and for her
contribution towards Australian business.
Transformational leadership communication:
Transformational Leadership communication can be effective when the leader has the ability to
remove the anticipated barriers to communication in transmitting a message, understand the audience,
selecting a correct medium of delivery and creating the message in such a way that it reaches the
audience in its original form (Boies, Fiset & Gill, 2015). Allis understands the fact that being
commented on the dressing sense is something that people. The book written by Janine Allis has
successfully reached the audience with the purpose for which it was made as she has motivated so
many budding entrepreneurs to achieve their vision of starting their own businesses (The Secrets of
My Success, 2019). Core leadership communication involves having the ability to work in teams,
organizing productive meetings, maintaining proper external and internal relationship and others.
Janine Allis has the ability to work in teams because she understands their needs of her employees.

Janine do not like so show allows her employees to come to office in casuals. This attitude of her
makes her employees feel good and that is why they like working with her. She also spends time with
her employees by going with them for parties because enjoying with subordinates is important as has
been said by her in one of her interviews. These are some reasons why she can work well in team and
this is an essential requirement for leadership communication. Organizational communication
involves communicating in such a way to influence the internal and external stakeholders. Janine Allis
had said in an interview that boost keeps customer satisfaction as their main objective and she wanted
boost to be the first thing that comes in the minds of the customers when they think about health juice
(SmartCompany, 2019). She has said that the secret of success also lies in using social networking
platforms that help to understand the customers and reach them (Scaefer, 2014).
Positive Ethos in the Transformational Leader
Positive ethos means self-reflection and how others evaluate the leaders. It is created through good
reputation, self-confidence and other characteristics. A transformational leader shows the following
positive ethos: inner characters are honesty, honorable, truthful, fair and ethical. Janine allis has said
in an FAQ session of Retail Zoo that to turn the business idea into a successful empire, it is important
to maintain integrity of self and of the business. People must speak what is true irrespective of how
hard the situation is and no matter what is the cost for saying the truth (Janine’s Business Secrets -
Retail Zoo, 2019). This shows that Janine Allis has the inner character of truthfulness. Janine allis has
always been honest about her feelings. She never boasted that she was confident in all situations in
fact she has honestly discussed about times when she felt like she would fail and that made her work
harder in her life (Boost Juice founder reveals secrets to her global health empire, 2019). People
because of her values and beliefs respect Janine allis. Young generation’s respects her because she
understands their needs and says that it is normal to make mistakes and unless people make mistakes
they cannot learn and grow (Allis dishes the juice on business success, 2019). The outward
manifestation of positive ethos is: charismatic, well prepared and knowledgeable and documented
expertise. Leaders are said to have integrity when they are capable of influencing others by being
reliable and doing what they are saying. Janine allis creates the devotion to work in others through her

personal devotion towards work. She had said that she was so devoted towards her work that she
never got a work-life balance that is she did not get time for her children she even had to work for 100
hours a week during the initial stages of boost’s growth (Janine Allis – Boost Juice and Beyond,
2019). Charismatic leaders connect with their audience by connecting with them emotionally and
have good verbal communication. Janine allis is a charismatic leader because she has the ability to
connect with people by connecting with them through her personal life experiences. Janine allis told
in her keynote graduation speech at the Australian institute of business that she never got admission
into business school in fact she studied in a school where they were taught to be the supporters of
leaders and not leaders. This is how she connects with people that for becoming a successful
entrepreneur it is not necessary to get admission in b-schools. Traditional methods of becoming
successful are no longer applicable for todays generation. This is how Janine allis emotionally
connects with the young generation (Janine Allis Keynote Speech, 2019). She has been awarded with
Australian award for excellence in women leadership this award is given to women for creating
equality of treatment at a state, national or international level.
Janine Allis transformational leadership skills through emotional intelligence
Emotional intelligence helps people to interact with each other by understanding our own emotions as
well as the emotions of others. It involves the ability to adapt to changes and ability to control
emotions and impulses effectively. (Palmer et al., 2001). Janine Allis has said that it is necessary to
adapt to digitalization, which is most famous today in marketing because it is n more the age of brick
and more, but people attract customers through social media. This shows how Janine allis has adapted
herself to address the technological changes (www.youtube.com., 2019). Janine Allis had shown
many instances in her book where anyone else could have lost their hopes, but she remained calm.
Janine Allis has taken many tough decisions in her life which shows her decisiveness and shows her
emotional intelligence of Janine Allis (The Secrets of My Success, 2019). Her decision to expand
boost across different nations shows her determination. Janine Allis has always been able to
understand herself- she had said in her book that she had always kept the fulfillment of her needs as a
priority and that is why she has always enjoyed her life, and that is where her philosophy in life comes

from. She respects others emotions, and that is why Janine has created the policy for casual dress in
office because she knows that people do not like to be commented upon their attire. She empathises
with her people because she connected it to when she was working in a company, she said that the
first thing people notice is whether the management is good or bad, so she tries to create such an
environment where people feel good about their jobs as said by her in an interview. She had always
had a positive attitude in her life that is why when boost was facing many problems in China then also
she kept expanding (How Boost Juice founder Janine Allis is expanding her business into China.,
2019).
Discussion on Her Communication Abilities:
A transformational leader has good communication skills. Good communication skills include:
speaking ability, writing ability, empathetic listening, appropriate non-verbal’s, connection with the
audience, displayed emotional intelligence and sensitivity to intercultural differences. Janine allis’s
good communication skills are prominent through videos. She has clarity of mind and she makes sure
that her message reaches her audience effectively. In a recent speech that was given by her at
Australian institute of business, she was called to motivate the audience that is the people who are
graduating. She motivated the audience by giving them instances from her life where she was
confused and was emotionally broken but she kept moving ahead in her life and became one of the
most successful entrepreneurs. She even asks her audience to make mistakes because even Janine has
made many mistakes in her life but that is how she learnt and kept moving ahead (Janine Allis
Keynote Speech - AIB 2018 Graduation, 2019). Her writing ability can be seen through the books
written by her. Her books have won many awards and she has used a very casual language in her book
to engage her audience and so that they do not find any difficulty in reading the books (Allis, 2016).
Non-verbal communication includes facial expressions, body gesture and body posture. In all her
speeches, Janine allis builds the interests of her audience through her facial expressions, he uses
humor in her speech by using sarcasm and also makes her communication better by using proper
facial expressions. Her body posture and gesture also shows that she is interested in communicating

with her audience. She connects with her audience by using various instances from her life which
shows her positive attitude (Leadership Communication, 2019).
Rhetorical Analysis:
Ethos:
Ethos refers to the ability of the communicator to speak in a persuasive manner. Analysing the
communication style of Janine Allis one can easily detect her ability to convince and persuade her
audience. Allis while speaking of the importance of deadline in works, mentions that either a person
achieves their goals on the due date or does not achieve them at all (Baumlin & Meyer, 2018). She
also stated that an employer could never be friends with employees, though the employees may be
wishing them. The first reason is that employees will stop taking the employers seriously and their
respect for the employers will decrease. The second reason is that they will not be able to make proper
decisions. Her brilliant persuasive style helps to convince the readers about the importance of
maintaining distance with assistants (Janine Allis, 2015).
Pathos:
Again, in another interview published recently, Janine mentions that Janine’s Boost Juice, and other
brands that Janine owns, including Cibo Espresso and Salsa’s Tex Mex, are oriented towards their
workforce in businesses (Emanuel, Rodrigues & Martins, 2015). Janine Allis has said that the main
reason why a company fails or become successful is because of the people who are the part of the
organisation. To substantiate her point, and explain the importance of having a people-oriented
culture, she mentions that Boost had started with her as a member and one temporary staff. She
considers the listeners' emotions and empathises with them as she communicates with the audience.
When Allis argues she uses logic behind her arguments.
Logos:
Allis ensures that her paper has a logical flow (Heinaman, 2018). She said in an interview that she
believes every day to be a new opportunity to improve oneself, to leave the comfort zone and learn.

She said that people need to be curious in life only then they can grow. She has a very good sense of
humor, which shows in her communication style. The logical flow in her argument and in everything
she says is clearly evident when she not only talks about being driven at work, and learning new
things, but also substantiates her argument by taking examples from her personal life.
According to me after having profiled Janine Allis, it can be concluded that leaders use different
appeals to influence others such as ethos, pathos, and logos. Positive ethos is the most important
appeal to influence people. Positive ethos is reflected in the communication style of the Janine Allis as
she uses emotional intelligence, manages sensitivity and inter-cultural differences. I have learnt
through this assignment that what are the qualities of a transformational leader, how effectively they
can communicate and interact with their audience. The emotional intelligence helps in interacting
with others effectively. Positive ethos means self-reflection and how others perceive us.
From the above discussion, it can be concluded that transformational leaders have positive ethos that
earns them reputation and credibility from others perspective, have emotional intelligence that helps
them interacting with others, they influence others through their communication skills- written and
spoken. These leaders empathizes with others and connect with them intellectually. Janine allis is one
such leader who has shown all these characteristics and helped boost reach the top through her
abilities and skills. Janine allis has won many awards for her entrepreneurial abilities and leadership
skills. In the study, a rhetorical analysis of the leader’s communication skills has also been done.
