INTRODUCTION
Mrs Denise Palmer is a patient who is being looked after by three3rd year nursing students. We
watch a twenty minute case study video showing us how important it is to provide patient
centred care and the importance of teaching the 6 C's of caring. In the nursing industry, it is
essential to provide comfort and to help provide emotional and physical ailments when needed.
This is because it enables in providing care services as per needs of patients. Caring plays
crucial role in nursing. The patient caring depends from what injury is he or she suffering from.
If caring is not provided in effective way then it leads to improper behavior of person, etc.
besides that nursing practice is dependent on type of care given.. this is because practice
changes when care differs. In this reading, we will go into detail of Jean Watson theory of human
care and how this will be implemented in providing care to Mrs Denise Palmer. Nursing is
defined by Caring. It has been described like this for many years, and we go into more depth
when we talk about the 6 C's. We will discuss the importance of working alongside the patient's
beliefs and values, being engaged with the patient, making sure there is shared decision making
and making sure the nurse is always provided with a compassionate presence. It is especially
crucial for nurses also to understand that it not only about providing personalised care but also
centred family care and relation centred care. For nurses to provide the absolute highest quality
of care, we need to practice professional standards and develop the understanding that we are
ensuring the most top-quality care upon evidence for our patients.
Observation of caring behaviour
In nursing, caring behaviour is described as actions which is concerned with well being
of patient like comfort, sensitivtity, honesty, etc. this highly influence on care practices given.
Thus, any change in practices directly impact on behaviour of patient. therefore, it is necessary
to adopt relevant practices so that behaviour is not impacted. Similarly, In the case study, the
nursing students show many different caring behaviours. It describe caring practices as requiring
caring attitudes that include kindness, patience, comfort, sensitivity and respect. The nursing
students also showed professionalization of caring it 'requires connection, a person-centred
approach, compassion, mutual recognition and involvement. In person centred care, there is a
strong focus on the individual and respect for their personal beliefs, values, needs and

So, here, an example of caring behaviour which can be observed is that nursing students entered
into patient room they hand over smoothly and reassure Mrs palmer followed ISBAR setting.
Then they introduced to her and explained what she has been through. Apart from it, there were
number of behaviour reflected in it such as They then followed by explaining her background,
(patients history) the nurse who was doing the pass overdid this very well as when she was going
through the patient's information. She also added personal details about Mrs palmers life, such as
she does have two special needs children at home. So, in this way they got insight about her life
and how she is feeling now. Furthermore, student then continued to do observation and in that
way got Mrs palmer into conversation. They nurse knew that mrs palmer will feel confident if
she is given right care and valued her feelings. In this another example is was when one of the
nursing students saw Denise Palmer was upset and put the time into her by taking a seat next to
her and asking if she was ok and asked how she was feeling. The nurse sat to her next rather than
standing near. But if nurse stood then it would have made feel uncomfortable to mrs palmer. She
would have felt less valued. Thus, bond is developed by communicating with patient and
fulfilling their expectation. Therefore, it can be stated that it is necessary to value patient
feelings. This can be done by showing caring behavior through which bond is established.
However, in case of Mrs palmer nurse showed caring behavior by sharing her feelings and
interacting with her.
Linking observed behaviour with 6 C’s of caring
In nursing care there are 6 C’s which is followed. So, nurse is required to follow these in
order to perform their role in effective way. It describes the basic core values that are
Compassion, Competence, Confidence, Conscience, Commitment and Comportment. Here, main
behavior of nursing care is to provide care to patients. Compassion refers to treating of patient
as individual not disease. It means to show empathy. Competence means to meet standards and
promote quality care. confidence is gaining of knowledge and experience and to identify
strength and weakness. Commitment is to commit and work with high level of care. conscience
is sense of doing wrong and right within practice. At last comportment is attitude that how to
behave. Similarly, in case study these six core values are reflected. The mentors are having
crucial role in the provision of health care and in educating nurses and midwives. Therefore, in
case study it has been observed that when mrs palmer was upset nurse showed compassion.
Hence, it is described as how care is given through relationships based on empathy, respect and

dignity. Also, it is known as showing kindness towards others. However, sometimes it is
difficult to show all these 6 C’s in caring but for nurse it is necessary to overcome those
challenges. In current case study it is observed that Shahn, Blake and Liz showed the importance
to display all these qualities and showed us in Nursing we need to be able to understand
communication is a vital component we must display daily.
It has been observed that in order to become a nurse it is necessary to follow all
assessment and other things. Here, successful health assessment needs to be attained in effective
way. This is because it allows in collecting of data in and analyzing it. then the info needs to be
delivered properly. In the nursing literature, there is a variety of examples of the importance of
being capable of providing good communication. Effective communication is not only just for
the patient but also for their family/careers and friends who are there to support the current
patient. This all helps when defining Persons Centred Care, and to have effective communication
that is being built on mutual trust, respecting the patient's choice and completely involving the
patients in any decision treating them as a person. As shown in the case study, this was all shown
very conclusively and was displayed throughout it. It is critical when becoming a nurse; we
understand the input and output of the 6 C's; it is the best guide that will help in becoming a
successful nurse. Although it will be hard to present all 6 C's of caring it is critical all nursing
students try to do it at their best capability, and they will then have the reassurance they are
doing the best they can.
Nursing care theory and practice
It is evaluated that there are various types of nursing theories which is available. The
theory are applied in different situation and vary from one another. Also, use of theory depends
on type of nursing practice and how it is applied in caring. So, on such theory that is theory of
human caring developed by jean Watson is applied in it. the theory describe caring as essence
and moral idea of nursing. Human caring is the basis for nursing's role in society; indeed,
nursing's contribution to society lies in its moral commitment to human care. it is known that
health care professionals need to have a deep understanding of the philosophical value based
approach. Thus, Watsons theory points out that no patient will be able to heal without the mind-
body-soul interaction and if viewed as just an object instead of a human being. The theory
provide ethical, theoretical and moral framework to inspire and change the way nurses operate.
Moreover, Watson specifies that: caring is not just an emotion, concern, attitude, or benevolent

desire. Caring is the moral idea of nursing, whereby the end is protection, enhancement, and
preservation of human dignity. Human caring involves values, a will and a commitment to care,
knowledge, caring action, and consequence. Besides that, it is stated that all human care is
related to subjective response of human health conditions. In addition, theory analysis that how
caring build relationship, connection, compassion, etc and what type of language is used in it.
hence, in case study it can be stated that how mrs palmer was treated and respected as human
being. It is interesting when looking into this because it is important in a career such as nursing
that nurse think about this and act out on it during their career. Without having an emotional
support it can really lead for the patient to feel uncomfortable. Caring is central to nursing
practice and promotes health better than a simple medical cure. Therefore, Watson stated that
there is need to follow holistic approach in nursing practice. The approach enable in
understanding what things is to be done. As it is integrated with nursing practice care is given
accordingly to patient. So, within health care industry it is understanding what is going to be
required for each patient, everyone single person is going to be different to deal with, and it is
know how that can deliver the best patient care to them now, Watson theory has a good
understanding of how each person will be different, and you need to adjust the way you work
each day so you can deliver that best patient care. thus, in this way nurse follow it and they are
able to deal and handle situation. With that patient needs are fulfilled.
CONCLUSION
From essay it is summarised that there are nursing practice plays vital role in delivering
care to patient. it allows in asking history, beliefs etc. of patient and respecting their values.
The nurse in mrs palmer case study showed , a person centred approach, compassion, mutual
recognition and involvement. There are 6 C’s of nursing care which is followed. here, the basic
core values that are Compassion, Competence, Confidence, Conscience, Commitment and
Comportment. Similarly, in mrs palmer care nurse showed core value of compassion. She
showed empathy towards her and communicated. The jean Watson theory enable in
understanding in depth about how to introduce with patient during providing care. the theory
describe caring as essence and moral idea of nursing. The theory provide ethical, theoretical and
moral framework to inspire and change the way nurses operate. Moreover, Watson stated that
there is need to follow holistic approach in nursing practice. The approach enable in
understanding what things is to be done. As per case study, it is stated that every patient will be

different, and the nursing students understood what the best care for Mrs palmer was and made
her more at ease. It is also about understanding that it is not just about the patient but also the
family, friends and making sure the 6 C's are being delivered to everyone in evolved in the
situation.
