Artist: Jill Krutick
Title: Koi Fish Pond 1 and 2
Materials: Acrylic on canvass 12 into 12 each
Introduction
The piece of abstract art under discussion is Koi Fish Pond 1 & 2 painted and expressed
by Jill Krutick. The painting is expressed ion canvass of size 12 into 12 and the material used is
acrylic. In this project, various elements of abstract art and its expression are discussed both as a
layman and as a critique.
Visual Description
First Impression
At first glance, the painting appeared as an autumn scene as the colors of fall that is
yellow and red are quite dominant in the painting. I noticed yellow color and its transition from
other colors the most pronouncedly in the painting. No one focus was established in the first
glance of the painting.
Deeper Visual Inspection
I believe the design and combination of colors used in this painting represent the
contemporary arts quite effectively. The texture has been given significant importance in this
painting. Several areas of color are made more pronounced than the other. I have noticed that
these tools have been used to make expressionism more vivid and dynamic. Not only this but
also the depth of various colors and varied plainness of the painting represents not only the
contemporary arts but also the dexterity of the artists with her colors and brushes.

Uniqueness of Subject
This painting is the part of the swirl series of Jill, and it has a different and unique
approach as compared to other collections. This signature swirl style has been adopted in this
painting, and the principle followed in this painting is abstract expressionism. I believe the
swirling and spinning elements used in the painting stand for broader and larger mimicry of
various forces of nature, for example, swirling the water and hurling air.
Subject Matter
Function of Artwork
According to my observation, the theory of expressionism prevalent in abstract art fits
properly in this situation. The notion of expressionism refers to a broader and wider movement in
America at the end of the 1940s. This piece of art clearly and explicitly shows the deep and
profound influence of this movement. This movement gave an outpouring to numerous new and
innovative painting styles such as the swirling painting style of this piece of art. From my
observation, I can evidently say that all the artifacts of abstract expression have one or the other
unique feature in them, but they do possess some common traits. The salient features that are
characteristic of abstract expressionism are the following.
1. Free and spontaneous expression of emotion which may let the painter deviate from the
original style or design of the painting.
2. The forms drawn are most often not from the visible world instead of abstract is painted
in concrete.
3. The psychic intuition plays a dynamic and vibrant role in this form of art.

After examining paintings of Jill, I have come to know that lyrical abstraction is the
competitive edge enjoyed by Jill. The same approach has been used in the piece of art under
consideration to emphasize more strongly element of symbolism in it. Different forms of art are
symbolized via this technique. These include music, movies and childhood doodles. I have
noticed that at times deviating from the set parameter of the moving on this style a sudden
explosion of emotions adds appeal and attraction to the art. All these methods have been used
effectively by Jill Krutick.
Iconography
Jill Krutick being an ardent follower of abstract expression and mastering in lyrical
abstraction deviated extensively from traditional iconography. Both iconography and lyrical
abstraction stand is the antidote to each other. Some important elements of lyrical abstraction in
this regard are enlisted and briefly elucidated hereunder.
1. Lyrical abstraction witnessed the transition from the minimalistic style with a rigid
following of geometry to harmonious and painterly style.
2. This approach uses sensuous colors, and this aims at the reinstatement of principles of
aesthetics. This feature essentially refutes the hard and rigid theoretical basis of
iconography.
During the early developments of lyrical abstraction, the styles and modes of painting were
limited; however, with the passing of a decade, several off-shoots from the main hardcore lyrical
abstraction arose. This led to the commencement of a divide in the very paradigm of lyrical
abstraction. Different modes of paintings also emerged, for example, color field painting, hard
edge fielding, and color stain painting.

Personal Reflection
This piece of art is really an artifact worth be seen. The color scheme and the mastery of
forming ups and dips on the canvass have left me speechless. Initially, it seems as if some sort of
chaos and uproar is imminent in the paintings. The more this painting is looked on, the serener
and calmer it becomes. Such an aesthetic essence which has brought about arousing of emotions
is seldom found in abstract art.
The texture and the swirling style of the painting have influenced me as well. Bringing
about required shape, form and texture while staying the structural and functional bottlenecks of
a particular style of painting which in this case is swirling style is certainly difficult. The
dexterity of the artist with her colors and brushes in the presence of all these limitations is
stunning.
Most often lyrical abstraction is associated with a free form of painting which is not
governed or rule by any rigid paradigm. It is always expected that such a form of art has to be
chaotic, rough and non-discreet. This notion has been refuted successfully by Jill. Not only this
but also the legacy of abstract expressionism which provides for spontaneity with dexterity has
been taken along effectively. In short, the artifact under consideration is a great piece of art.
Skills, insight, intuition, and purpose of the painter are all well expressed in the painting. These
modern trends in paintings are certainly going to embark on a newer and more dynamic future of
abstract expressionism.
