NURS 513: Assessing Junior Emergency Nurses' Capability in Triage Zone

This research proposal investigates the capability of junior emergency nurses in the triage zone to identify severely ill patients, specifically within the context of Saudi Arabia. The study aims to assess the current practices, explore the consequences of delayed detection, and identify strategies to improve patient outcomes. The proposal includes a literature review that examines the triage system, the importance of experience in recognizing subtle symptoms, and factors affecting triage decisions. The research will employ a positivism research philosophy and a deductive approach, using a qualitative data collection method with questionnaires distributed to nurses in Saudi Arabian hospitals. The data will be analyzed using SPSS version 22.0, and the study will adhere to ethical considerations such as voluntary participation, informed consent, and confidentiality. The project includes a timeline and references to support the proposed research.

Introduction and background
• These are the consequences which put challenge on the
ethical quality of the entire emergency care.
• In the triage zone, there is always need of skilled and
experienced nurses because it is about the emergency care.
• The emergency nurses should be offered proper education
resources for developing and maintaining a high standard of
competence in the triage.

The Problem statement
• Nowadays, in most of the hospitals it has been noticed that
they are assigning the junior nurses in the triage zone which
can develop many consequences.
• Therefore, in this study the capability of the junior nurses will
be shaded out who are assigned in the triage zone in terms of
deducting severely ill patients.

• The exploration of the consequences of early detection on late deduction
of serious cases.
• The investigation of how can the consequences of late deduction of
serious cases can be avoided by the junior nurses.

Literature review
• the triage system was instituted in the year 1964 in a hospital
of New York as the triage system was handled previously by
the physicians only
• This particular transition to the triages by nurses has proved
to be quite efficient because the waiting times of the patient
have decreased and the satisfaction has increased regarding
the service (Aacharya, Gastmans & Denier, 2011).

• It is further argued that being an important aspect of effective
triage, the identification of urgent conditions or life
threatening conditions which are presented with obscure
symptoms of subtle exposure is highly crucial.
• The capability of recognizing this kind of cases is all about
experience which the junior nurses lack (Afaya, Azongo &
Yakong, 2017).

The inexperienced nurses can provide high attention to a
particular patient who actually needs less attention or they
may also provide less attention to a patient who needs high
attention that can lead to late deduction of severely ill
patients or early deduction of less severely ill patient.

complex problems which needs investigations, consultations and
procedures (Kerie, Tilahun & Mandesh, 2018).
• The nurses of triages can reliably and with validity estimate the
complexity of these types of cases and guide the emergency department
workflow along with the system analysis.

• The waiting times of the emergency department affect
the satisfaction of the patients but in many cases it can
leave adverse effects on the outcomes of the health of
the patient.
• Similarly, the patients also need to understand through
education campaigns about which problems are suitable
to be presented to the medicine department and which
are not with the knowledge of urgency and waiting times
as per the urgency.

• There are also some factors which leave impact on the triage
decisions such as the clinical characteristics of patients along
with the combination of clinical features of the patient.
• The factors such as skill mix of medical staff and nursing, the
triage guidelines and the staff intuition (Pate & Pathan, 2019).

• The researchers also recommend that a triage nurse always should fulfill
few conditions such as minimum 3 months of experience in the
emergency department, advanced cardiac life support certification,
educational preparation, certified in the emergency of the nursing in
critical care, the inservice education sessions, the completion of the work
books of training, the triage guidelines and the unit based programs of
orientation.
