Stanley Kariuki is a Registered Nurse, currently working as an RN case manager at

Reflection #1
Essential IX: Baccalaureate Generalist Nursing Practice
The alignment of nursing roles to prioritize patient needs, with incentives, culture and
structure is often a challenge in healthcare settings. However, patient-centeredness is anchored on
ensuring that patients, families, communities and populations are the major drivers of the
healthcare learning and delivery process. They should actively participate in healthcare design
and decisions (Smith, Saunders, Stuckhardt, & McGinnis, 2013). The BSN program has equipped
competencies to practice with a wide range of individuals, families, communities and populations
and provide patient-centered and holistic care to all kinds of patients.
I have demonstrated generalist nursing practice during my practicum, where I engaged in
a variety of practices such as patient and community education, community-based healthcare
campaigns and medical camps, and basic patient support in emergency and other departments
within the healthcare settings. I used brochures, leaflets and posters to educate the communities
on healthcare issues. Marcus (2014) explained that education of patients, families and
communities can be done using print media such as newspapers, brochures and leaflets, audio-
visual methods, verbal communication and demonstration. I have successfully used these tools
during practice and ascertained their effectiveness.

Essential VIII: Professionalism and Professional Values
During my nursing practice, I strive to maintain professionalism and important nursing
values even while working in stressful situations. According to Zamanzadeh, Jasemi, Valizadeh,
Keogh, and Taleghani (2015), it is important for healthcare providers to understand that the

patient is a human and should be treated with dignity. It is important to patients by promoting
self-care, therapeutic consultation, dignity, hope, vigor, autonomy and vitality.
I engage in reflective journaling as a strategy for ensuring that I maintained the ethics and
standards of care when interacting with patients. Koshy, Limb, Gundogan, Whitehurst, and Jafree,
(2017) pointed out that reflective journals are an important component of healthcare practice. The
practice of reflecting helps nurses to understand the important their strengths, weaknesses and
areas of improvement. Reflective journaling has enables me maintain professionalism through
continuous learning and professional growth.

Essential III: Scholarship for Evidence-Based Practice
Through my nursing education and practice, I have appreciated the importance of
evidence-based practice in improving patient care. Reid, Briggs, Carlisle, Scott, and Lewis (2017)
mentioned that in the modern healthcare environment, nurses need to provide care that is
anchored on available evidence. I obtain information regarding current evidence from books,
journals and internet sources. Ammouri et al. (2014) acknowledged that nurses can successfully
engage in evidence-based practice by participating in continuing in education activities such as
use of internet application or research, and statistical analysis. Senior nurses can significantly
contribute to evidence-based practice by providing junior practitioners with the necessary
resources. Mentorship from faculty members and colleagues has also enabled me to engage in
evidence-based practice as a way of providing excellent clinical care.
Professional Goals
My short-term goals is to work as a registered nurse in an organization that offers an
opportunity for growth and learning with the focus of improving my nursing knowledge and

skills. I believe that completion of my BSN program will be a major milestone towards a
successful career in nursing. I envision to pursue a Masters in Nursing, as part of my commitment

Having understood The Essentials of Baccalaureate Education for Professional Nursing
Practice, I believe that I am well prepared to work in complex healthcare systems. American
Association of Colleges of Nursing (2008) pointed out the importance of evidence-based practice
and patient-centered care. When nurses understand their expected disciplinary standards, they can
effectively examine their strengths, weaknesses, and areas of improvement (Flinders 2013). While
pursing my BSN program, I achieved the requirements of the AACN essentials as follows:

The BSN program has equipped me with an all-round liberal knowledge on issues
of culture, society, art and science, which are relevant to my nursing profession. I have
gained skills and competencies to enable me work in diverse settings, and work with

Through the program, I have gained leadership skills that are essential in
