Ketogenic diet is usually considered to be beneficial for the followers but
there are some side effects being admitted with these diets known as
ketone flue including symptoms like poor energy and mental function,
sleep issues, nausea, increased hunger etc.
The aim of this poster is to highlight the argument with evidences
weather the ketone diet is beneficial or harmful for the consumer.
BACKGROUND
According to Bala et al, (2018) Ketogenic diet has beneficial effects on weight loss and
are well known by the population in current times. The diet is full of protein and fats
that are essential elements for human body and ketone diet provides both these
elements in appropriate composition. The study also stated that there is some evidence
of kidney function harm due to ketone diet. For years it was misunderstood that dietary
fat consumption enhances the risk to diabetes, heart diseases and other diseases. The
current evidence provides overview that the carbohydrate rich diet are more off to be
held responsible for these risk factors and high in fat diet is beneficial for human system
(Ludwig et al, 2018). Some researches argue that the relevance of fat or carbohydrate in
diet is less but the type of fat or carbohydrate consumption plays major role in the
health benefits. Consumption of high fat diet has been in controversy since ages and
regulations based on low scientific consensus has been passed in order to reduce the
dietary fat intake by the population for better health. Result of these regulations were
that the diet of average population in USA reduced fat consumption from 42% in 1970
to 34% currently (Ludwig et al, 2018). Current scenario have turned the tables and
awareness regarding the high fat diet and its benefits on health of an individual by
cutting down the carbohydrate intake has been proved that is promoted by majority of
weight control programmes and diet plans.
It is seen that human body metabolized carbohydrate over fat in order to produce
glucose as part o energy unit for the body. Increased fat diets are considered to have
adverse effects such as high fat metabolism induced tumor activity in cells, regulate
inflammatory mediator (Kiens and Astrup, 2015.). In the study by Women’s Health
Initiative Dietary Modification Trial, a low fat intervention proved to be less beneficial in
reducing body mass index as well controlling the diabetes in patient. Studies prove that
ketone diet are proved to be beneficial in reducing the prevalence of obesity and type 2
diabetes, the mechanism is defined by the additional ketosis in body by cutting down
carbs and increase uptake of fat (Burke ET AL, 2017).
Some basic side effects of ketone diet includes changes in mineral and water
composition of body, changes in lifestyle and sleep pattern difficulties (Ludwig et al,
