Introduction
Study skills are the set of skills used by the all the students in order to perform better and
achieve their desired career objectives effectively. It is also defined as technique that enables
students in studying, recalling and retaining all the required information to be successful in their
academic career (Asonitou and Hassall, 2019). Study skills plays an essential role behind the
success and growth of an students, it motivates them to become more efficient learners. There are
various skills that can be learned by the students in order to perform better in their academic
career such as communication skills or time management skills. Improving communication skills
will helps students to build confidence to communicate their ideas and viewpoints with other
without any kind misunderstanding. For continue to grow and become successful it is essential
for the students to continue to enhance their skills and capabilities. This report highlights the
detailed analysis of the skills required by the students to be successful in their academic career.
Also ten main skills which are mainly taught in the study skills for higher education course are
highlighted in this report.
Main Body
Study skills are various skills required by the students in order to perform better in their
academic career and achieve desired career objectives. Skills is defined as the ability of an
individual which enables them them to perform better and achieve desired academic goals. Right
skills also help students to be successful in the future career path also (Beagon, Nialland Ní and
Fhloinn, 2019). There are various skills included in the study skills for higher education course
that will enable students to study more effectively and get higher results in their academic career.
Ten main skills that are mainly taught in the study skills for higher education skills course are
mentioned below:
Reading comprehension skills: Another essential skills required by an student is the
reading comprehension skills, it is the ability to effective read text, process it and analyse its
meaning (Conway, 2020). The reading comprehension skills mainly depends on two
interconnected capabilities such as word reading which involves able to decode the text. The
another one is language comprehension which means effectively able to determine the meaning
of word. This skills will help the students to effective process what is being read by them and
determine its meaning. For a student reading plays an essential role to get better results or marks.

Without proper comprehension reading skills, students will not be able to properly understand
what they read leading to impact their academic success. But having proper comprehension
reading skills will help students to understand important lessons, stories and arguments enabling
them to perform better in their academic career (Dumfordand Miller, 2018).
Note taking skills: Another skills taught in the skills for higher education course is the
note taking skills, it is the ability of the students to record important information from various
sources and platforms. Taking notes enables students or an individual to record the essence of the
information, also allowing them to easily recall everything whenever important. It also make it
easy for the student to easily remember important information and get success in their academic
career. Note taking is the practice of writing down important information in a systematic way or
recording important points of information. It is considered to be essential skills for the students
leading them to be successful in their academic career. Learning this skills will also help students
to study more effectively and get higher results in their academics. The teacher needs to ensure
that the students are effectively taught this skills, so that they can perform better (King, 2019).
Stress management skills: It refers to various techniques used by an individual in order
to control and manage their level of stress. Stress is mainly the result of feeling bound and
trapped by the problems in day to day lives. Students are mainly immobilised through their
inability to get a positive outcome for a tough task, that can lead to creating stress among them.
For them to perform better and get desired results in their academic career it is essential for them
to manage and control their stress. It can lead them to perform poorly and offer negative results,
stress can also directly impact the academic performance of the students. It is essential teachers
to teach students how to control their stress and perform better. They should be taught to solve
their problems one step at a time. Stress management skills will help students to be successful in
their academic career as well as perform better in future career path (Er, 2018).
Effective reading skills: Effective reading skills helps students to read in way that
enables them to understand, analyse and effectively reflect on the text written. Reading skills
helps students to read their material efficiently which includes selecting a material, engage
effectively with it and finish. In order to improve the reading skills of the students the teacher
should ensure to create a positive reading environment, reducing any kind of distraction.
Effective reading skills plays and essential role in success of the students in their academic
career. Reading is important and work as a effective building block for learning, despite of the

subjects. Proper reading skills helps students to enhance their communication and language skills
and get higher results. For students to perform better in their academic career teacher needs to
ensure that their reading skills is enhanced through motivating them to ready daily (Hoang and
Do, 2019).
Memorization skills: Another essential skills taught in the skills for higher education
course and which will help student to succeed in their university career is the memorization
skills. This skills allows students to make important information readily present for deeper
learning and creating connection to new material. Information stored into the memory leads to
creating creative connection will appear when another round of facts comes. Memorization skills
also help students to effectively retain the information studied by them leading them to get higher
results and perform better in their academic career. It is considered to be one of the essential
skills required by the students in order to grow and become successful in their academic career.
Creative thinking skills: Another skills essential for the growth of the students is creative
thinking skills, it is the ability of an individual to identify something new and creative. Creating

Problem solving skills: It is ability to determine and solve problems through applying
suitable skills systematically, it is considered to be an ongoing process which enables an
individual to properly analyse and determine the problem, create a mind map and them find all
the possible alternates available for the problem. A students face number of problems in their
academic career which can lead to creating barrier in their success or growth. In order to avoid
those road blocks and become successful it is essential for them to effectively solve their
problem. Enhancing problem solving skills will help students to achieve their desired career
goals and objectives as well as perform better.
Time management skills: It refers to process of organising and planning regarding how
to divide the time between specific activities. Good time management allow students to work
smarter not harder. In this way student get more work done in low time. When student have
good management skill they easily handle the pressure in work also. Time management is a very

important part for students to develop some good habits such as improving performance, produce
better work, deliver work on time, improve carrier opportunities, for increasing confidence and
so on. Without strong time management students did not do the work properly which leads to
producing bad quality work, missing deadlines, damage of work life balance and reduction in
professional reputation etc. For managing the time perfectly students must ensure that they
follow some steps which involves plan ahead, prioritize tasks, eliminate distraction, do not multi
task and appreciate itself for good work. With help of these steps students definitely get success
in their career, and also secure their future easily with good personality (Hulten, 2018).
Communication Skills: It is very essential part for students to understand the differences
in communication which includes face to face interactions, phone conversation and digitalized
communications such as email and other social media's. All these communications are necessary
as soft skills for students to create a successful career. Strong communication skills are important
to allow others and itself to understood the information more accurately and quickly. The
elements which are important for students to improve communication skills are listening, body
language, confidence, respect and using the correct medium. Good communication skills also
helped students at the time of interview and pass the selection process. Poor communication
creates negative impacts for students such as lack of specific communication, using incorrect
mediums to convey messages, failing to listen, blaming others etc. When students have bad
communication they are not able to pass final interview of any job in any company. So
communication skills is a very important part for students as a exam point of view also in all
company (Rebeleand Pierre, 2019).
Active listening skills: It refers to a pattern of listening which keeps you engage in
conversation with partner in a positive way. It is also the way to improve the students listening
skills which creates a conscious effort to hear the complete message being communicated. For
enhancing the listening skills students need to let the other person know that are you listening to
what they are saying. Try to respond to to the speaker in positive way which encourage them for
speaking continuously. In this way you get important and proper information from clients or
other persons. For developing active listening skills students must follow some necessary steps.
It includes pay attention, provide feedback, differ judgement, respond appropriately, and show
that you are listening carefully. With the help of active listening skills students get other benefit
also from improvement. After becoming a better listener, their productivity increased, as well as

ability also increased to influence and negotiate which helped to avoid conflict (Winstoneand
Carless, 2019).

From the above report, it has been concluded that skills plays an essential role in the
success and growth of the students. It is also analysed that there are various skills that can be
learned by the students in order to perform better in their university and get higher results. The
skills like communication skills helps students to effectively communicate their ideas and view
points with other without any kind of misunderstanding, also skills like time management helps
students to properly divide their time as per their task and get desired results timely. There are
number of skills that can be be learned by the students in their academic career which will help
them to perform better in their future and present career path. This report helps in analysing the
