Risk management system in a hospital or health care setting is very crucial issue as it is
associated with the patient safety and also with the safety of the employees of that hospital. By
introducing a risk management system in the organization, the organization mainly tries to give a
protection to patients and to the market share, assets, brand value, reputation of the company.
The main area of concern of the risk manager is to enhance the patient safety by reducing various
medical errors (Chartier, 2014). However, in modern days, the importance of safety of the
employees has become very important as a poor employee risk management system can reduce
the employee retention rate (Cloutier et al., 2015). In the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and
Research Center, the risk management system for the patients and employees is maintained in a
well manner. The hospital management has appointed a risk manager and the hospital has
different principles for maintaining safe guard of the employees.
In the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center, the management of the
hospital has created specific parameters to measure the patient safety and those measures are
mainly the infection prevention among the patients, fall prevention strategies and the
pressure injury prevention among the patients of the hospital. In addition to this, the hospital
management follows a safety manual specifically for the employees of the health care setting.
The manual has a few principles that cover all the employees such as food services
employees, logistic services employees, laboratory technician, nursing staff of the
organization. In case of the safety of the staffs of the hospital, the organization encourages to
use personal protective equipment in different segments of their service (Employee Safety
Manual ,2004). Different parts of their service, the organization has different safety manuals
and those are strongly practiced within the organization. As a part of the risk management

system, the management has introduced a plan named Strategic Plan 2013-2020
(KFSHRC ,2015).
King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center has recruited a risk manager to
manage the risks in the hospital setting related to the patients and the employees of the
organization. The risk manager is responsible for various activities in the organization. The key
responsibilities of the risk management system in the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and
Research Center are as below-
a) Development of safety policy for the patients and the employees of the
organization
b) Strategic planning for providing safety to the patients and employees
c) Investigations of any adverse incident that may happen to the patients or to
the employees of the organization
d) Ensuring safety environment for both of the patients and the employees
Inspection of the overall safety systems in the organization (KFSHRC, 2019).
The risk management manager tries to leading the organization towards a safer health
care in terms of patient safety and employee safety through securing the safety environment
in the hospital.
The risk management system is different for the patient and employees. In case of
patient safety they are mainly focusing on the improvement of the patients’ experience,
infection prevention of the patients in pre and post-operative condition, the issue of fall
among the patients, improvement in the incidents of pressure injury. As a part of their patient
safety, they take assessment from the patients in terms of disease treatment, quality of care

given to the patients. While performing infection prevention for the patients, the organization
primarily focuses on the issue of maintaining the hand hygiene by the health care staffs and
they strongly monitor the hand hygiene practice (KFSHRC, 2019). In case of managing the
issue of fall prevention, they specifically mark the patients who have risks of falling by
assessing previous data and those patients are given special care. Pressure injury prevention
is another area of patient safety and in that case special type of hospital bed is used for the
patients in order to prevent the pressure injury among the patients (KFSHRC, 2019). In order
to provide a proper safe guard the organization has taken several measures such as different
medical waste management technique for infectious and non-infectious materials. In case of
radioactive components, the system is absolutely different. In order to prevent puncture
related infection from the sharp instrument, PPE is used. In case of patient care related waste
management system they have specific color coding system in the hospital. To minimize the
risk of fall due to the wet floor of the hospital, the organization places poster with specific
danger signage such as “WET FLOOR” in relevant places (Employee Safety Manual ,2004).
All the employees are given proper training for operating the instruments in the hospitals. In
the pathological laboratory, the OSHA standards are strongly maintained by the organization.
In addition to this, the mandatory use of personal protective equipment during specimen
handling, handling of chemical reagents have reduced the risks among the patients. All the
electrical instruments, which are used by the nurses and other staffs, are checked daily. The
use of gloves and gown during the service delivery is mandatory for the nursing staffs of the
hospital. The staffs of special care units of the hospital are given special training on use of
various instrument as they have to use various electronic and electric equipment (Employee
Safety Manual,2004).

The risk management program for patients and employees are separate in most of the
cases. However, issues like infection control is common for the two process. According to
the risk management statistics of the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre, it
is observed that the organization is successful in reducing the risks for the patients. In case of
fall injury prevention, it is noted that monthly fall injury rate among the patients has reduced
by 37% in 2017 in comparison with 2016. The pressure ulcer rate (monthly) was reduced
almost 7% in 2017 in comparison with 2016 (KFSHRC, 2019). So, it can be said that, the
risk management system of the organization is on the right way.
Lastly it can be concluded that, the risk management system of the hospital is
maintained. The employee safety and patient safety are maintained in different manner.
However, in some cases, the segments are overlapped with each other. The recruitment of the
safety manager in the organization is leading the organization towards a safe and healthy
work place for patients and as well as for the staffs of the hospital.
