Introduction
The National Government of Ireland aims to build human capital through the promotions of
Sports (Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, 2017)
The Sports Capital Programme is aimed at fostering a planned and integrated approach to
develop the sports and recreation facilities throughout Ireland. The objectives of this programme
are:
Assisting local, community and national level sports bodies as well as voluntary
organizations and schools in development of well designed sporting facilities to benefit
the local community.
Provision of assistance in building of sporting facilities to the disadvantaged areas
Encouraging the multi-purpose use of building.
Sports Allocations Under the National Sports Capital Programme are partly funded by The
Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport and partly by the National Lottery. (Department of

The report provides a brief overview regarding the allocations made towards various sporting
and non-sporting entities in the Kildare County towards building and maintenance of sporting
infrastructure.
About Kildare
Kildare is located in the mid east region of the Ireland. The Kildare country is a prosperous
county with a population of 210312. It is the seventh largest country in Ireland in terms of
population. Among these, 43,233 people were between the ages of 5 -13 while the population of
senior citizens (age 65 years and above) was 16,656. This presents a need for both sporting

The projects provided to Kildare included Scout Groups, Community Centres, Grants to Build
cricket facilities Every Year the Sports Capital Programme awards grants through the National
Lottery Programme. The National Lottery fund is designed to promote sports.. Various sports
associations apply for lotteries , in order to fund their projects. They are often helpful at a local
level since they help promote sports at a local level and maintain the regional pride.

As seen above, the local allocations stood at over 11.5 million. These included investment in
sporting facilities such as football clubs, boating clubs, cricket clubs etc. Over 15 different
sporting and related activities were supported through these funds for beneficiaries of all ages
The beneficiaries of these funds are not just schools and sporting clubs but also community
centres.

Euros. There were four projects with grant receipts over the sum of 300,000 Euros.
There were over 80 beneficiaries including a school, an adult school centre, two community
centers, the Kildare Community council and several sporting clubs club. (Department of

Concluding Remarks
The increase in Sports allocations is in keeping with the increase in the budgetary spending on
sports. (Department of Sports, Transport and Tourism, Ireland, 2016). Given below are the
details for the voted budget increases scheduled to take place in 2018. It is, therefore , expected
that the County of Ireland will receive more grants for sporting facilities and community centres
in 2018 and shall be able to service more people from different backgrounds with it’s investment
in local sports and community activities.
