KUNG HUNTER GATHERERS

The Kung form part of the people of the San and are located in the west of the Kalahari Desert,
in Botswana and even in the Ovamboland. The Kung people foraged mongongo nuts, wild game,
and even fruits. The desert provides a suitable habitat for most of the wild game. The water-
points also acted as baits as during very hot weather, the animals could gather around the water
sources in large numbers. The sand in the Kalahari supports the growth of the Mongongo tree
(Hill et al., 2011).
The food was collected by both women and the men using materials like baskets and skin
porches. Some of the food was collected from pitfalls dug near larger rivers or from the traps
made from plants. The men hunted for the food while the women performed tasks like gathering
fuel. Some of the food was foraged by the Kung and it used up to date include the mongongo
nuts and animals like the hare.
One of the positive aspects of hunting and gathering is that the status of the women during the
period was higher. This is because they also participated in the process just as the men. Another
positive aspect was that the hunters and gatherers lived a simpler life. There was no need to work
hard to get money so as to buy food. Food was provided by nature. Another aspect is that they
had a lot of free time to engage in other activities like making music. This is because hunting and
gathering only took a small portion of their time.
One of the negative aspects was that it exposed the Kung to a lot of danger. There was a
possibility of being attacked by wild animals (Konner, 2017). Another negative aspect was that
the source of food was not reliable and it mainly depended on the nature of the place they

inhabited. In addition to that, another negative aspect was that the life of a nomad was difficult. It
required that the hunter gathers to have the ability to adapt and cope with different conditions.
The hunter-gatherers settled down due to factors like the change in the climate. Due to settling
down, the hunter-gatherers were more centralized, and this pushed for the need for a leadership
system. However, settling down never affected the religion of the hunter-gatherers.
