What comes in my mind when I think of obtaining legal consent is my experience with
one boy when I was working in one of the hospitals in India. One morning, a boy was
brought by his father for cancer diagnosis. After the diagnosis, the boy turned positive with a
growth in his brain. The father was so frightened of the results that he forced the son to go for
surgery to remove the growth once and for all so solve the issue. This really shocked me
because based on Australian legal consent, the patient must be provided with the conducive
environment to make a sound decision that upholds patients’ values. As a nurse, I have a
responsibility to ensure that the patient is at the state of making a sound decision. Since the
patient was forced to go for surgery by the father, I found that to be against legal consent.

There is a need to obtain legal consent of every patient before commencing care delivery.
Before, obtaining legal consent, it’s the responsibility of the medical officer to ensure that the
patient is in the environment that he can make a sound decision about his health (Atkins et
al., 2017). For nurses to be able to do this, effective communication with the patient is very
key. Nurses should employ communication skills to obtain legal consent from the patient in a
professional manner to avoid the patient feeling offended and getting out of the doctor’s
diagnosis (Johnstone, 2016). Having said that, I find your understanding of this chapter much
detail than other student’s posts I have read.

I have had very one good nurse-patient relationship once in Kenya when I was
hospitalized at Kenyatta national hospital when I was having my first borne in 2015. It started
when I when my delivery was due but I could not have safe delivery based on the advice
from the doctors. However, since my family had a bad experience with cesarean procedures,
none of my family members wanted me to go through a cesarean procedure. It took the
intervention of one of the nurses to convince me and all of my family members to let me go
through the process. The nurse spent more than 3 hours advising us on why cesarean was the
best option and she will be the one spearheading the process herself. After advising us, the
nurse then gave us some time to make a decision based on her advice. The advice from the
nurse made the experience easy for me and my family that we all agreed for the procedure.

relationship and I must admit that through them, I have grasped a clear concept about what
chapter 4 is all about.
Nurses exist to serve patients by providing services that respond to the patient’s
needs. The best way nurses can make this happen is by involving patients in care delivery
(Atkins et al., 2017). This is important because by involving patients in care delivery like you
have put it, the nurse makes the patient feel valued and the patient gets the comfort that is
necessary for both physical, spiritual and social healing. The nurses will be providing patient-

centered care to patients when they involve patients in care delivery (Johnstone, 2016). The
essence of patient-centered care is that it will respond to patient needs effectively just like I
have put in my example above.
