Introduction
Law in defined as a set of rules that are applicable on society as a
whole so that application of rules and regulations can be
maintained. Application of laws are made through legal system
which elaborates rights and responsibilities in variety of ways. This
presentation describes law and legal system by defining different
types of law and main principles related to criminal law in United
Kingdom.

Types of law
In the English legal system there are number of laws
applicable for specific purpose and some of are as-
Civil law:It is a legal system defining set of laws
concerned with private affects of general public of
the country.
Criminal law: This form of law provides set of rules
and guideline in relation criminal activities.

 Common law: These are implied in
the economy in order to ensure
application of general rules and
regulations.
 Statute: Laws that are specifically
passed by legislature.

Principles of criminal law
Burden of proof: The person who is suspected is
available with burden of proof.
Mens-rea: It is termed as an act performed
knowingly even when results are clear and
measurable.

• Binding court hierarchy: Legal system acts in a well defined court hierarchical system.
While resolving the criminal case both the parties must respect hierarchical authority as it
is binding on them.
• Double Jeopardy: As per this principle of criminal law a person can not be charges
twice for the same offense. While trial is going on decision can be shifted to new trial but
once it is made it is final at that level of legal system.

Structure of magistrate and crown court
Magistrate Courts: This court is at the lowest level for making an appeal in relation to
criminal offense. At this stage of court structure of UK trial of summary offences,
committals to the crown court, family proceedings are made. Acts of this Court are
governed on the basis of Magistrate Court Act, 1980. Power of this court can not be
exceeded to crown court. Jury of the court is-
• Three magistrate, or
• A district judge

Route for appeal in criminal court
In criminal cases appeal can be made in the legal court
structure through making appeal in two courts such as-
• Magistrate's courts
• Crown Court
A criminal appeal must be filled to these two courts at the
first place to be make them appealable at higher court
authority.

Conclusion
From the above presentation in law and legal system it is concluded that there are number
of law specifically made to deal with particular form of offense. While dealing with
criminal offense principles of criminal law needs to be followed. Court structure is followed
while making an appeal related to particular offense.
