organisation has become the need of hour for leaders as well as managers in the modern era.
Companies across the globe take effective initiatives in a bid to come up with innovations at
regular intervals of time. In relation to this, there are several traditional and contemporary
innovation theories that are applied by corporations such as TRIZ, Disruptive Innovation, Dual
Innovation, Lean Innovation Management, Business Model Canvas, Three Horizons and many

widely used innovation theories are acknowledged to be Disruptive Innovation (current) and
Three Horizons (past). The discussion in relation to both the theories is given as underneath:-
Disruptive Innovation:
This theory was brought into existence within a book written by Professor Clayton
Christensen’s book named “The Innovator's Dilemma.” This is a theory which provides a
detailed overview regarding the rationale behind large scale established firms getting overtaken
by small scale entities. This gave rise to the idea of disruptive innovation. In other words, this
theory put forward the premises that small scale organisations have the potential with the help of
which they can disrupt the market of large entities (Ungureanu, Pop and Ungureanu, 2016). This
is facilitated by way of introduction of a new version of a product or service of corporation that
can appeal to the target audience in an effective manner. The innovation hereby is introduced
with the help of a new technology or concept.
Three Horizons:
The Three Horizons Innovation Framework is based upon McKinsey’s Three Horizons of
Growth and is applied in a bid to ascertain the extent to which the offerings of corporation are
able to deliver value and are aligned with the corporate strategy with the evolution of time
(Pynnönen, Hallikas, and Ritala, 2012). With reference to innovation, the 3 horizons are
identified as follows:-
Horizon 1: Exploiting the current offerings (core business activity and incremental
innovations to improve current offerings)
Horizon 2: Extending the business with new offerings which build on the core but
provide new value
Horizon 3: Exploring new future offerings that could change the company but aren’t
ready yet
With the efflux of time, it is seen that organisations observe and take into account the
alterations taking place within the scope of consumer needs, choices, rivalry, technologies,
market. This tends to decrease the value of current offerings, thereby giving rise to the need for
substitution with much more innovative merchandise. When this takes place, there are disruption
points wherein a horizon gets substituted by another one. This is illustrated with the help of an
image as outlined beneath:-

2. Explain the practical application of theories and thinking on innovation and creativity to the
workplace, giving examples to illustrate your answer.
3 Horizons:
This model is applied within the confines of business organisation for a number of
purposes, such as:-
To facilitate futuristic thought process in the organisational structure.
To develop a working atmosphere which facilitates stipulation of innovation initiatives in
terms of offerings or business policies (İplik,Topsakal and Doğan, 2014).
To develop intrinsic framework which is required for assurance of success of long term
innovation initiatives.
To inflate business analysis which put due emphasis over opportunities as well as
constraints that a corporation may encounter in the upcoming course of time. To create an effective developmental course of action which allows the fulfilment of
vision within the stipulated course of time.
Disruptive Innovation:
This is a theory that is widely being used by corporations across the globe in the present
era with a view to gain the attention of a large number of persons. A remarkable example of
application of disruptive innovation at international scale is Uber. This organisation significantly

disrupted the taxi sector by provision of transportation services on demand through booking done
by way of company's mobile app. The payment can be made either with the help of the
application or in cash. Yet another example of application of this theory is AirBnB. This
company disrupted the hotel sector by way of creation of a market which tends to set connection
between the spare bedrooms of people & apartment space and renters who look for temporary
kind of accommodations (Santoro and et. al., 2018). MaxCDN.com is another exemplary
organisation which largely disrupted the file syndication sector by provision of facilities which
were regarded tor be reasonable for low end marketplace instead of only the large web
properties.
3. Discuss how leadership styles can impact on innovation in organisations. Include at least three
examples of leadership styles and their impact on innovation.
Leadership existing within the confines of a corporation tend to place a significant
influence over innovation taking place within the organisation. In this regard, it is seen that
different companies adopt diverse leadership styles and these tend to hold positive or negative
results in relation to innovation within the company. With regards to this, impact of leadership
styles over innovation is explained by taking into consideration 3 crucial styles, as follows:- Transformational leadership style: This is a leadership style which is keen on
developing an atmosphere whereby changes take place in a rapid manner in accordance
with the alterations taking place within the business environment (Holtzman, 2014).
Thus, it can be identified that this leadership style creates positive working environment,
facilitating employees to give their contribution in coming up with innovations at regular
intervals. Participative leadership style: This leadership style fosters individuals working within an
organisation to get indulged in organisational practices and processes. As a result of
implementation of this style, staff gets encouraged and give their efforts in introducing
timely innovations.
Autocratic leadership style: This leadership style restrains the creativity and uniqueness
held by employees (Seebode, Jeanrenaud and Bessant, 2012). Thus, it can be identified
that this style has a negative influence upon innovation within the organisation as the
prime motivation for employees is absent hereby.
