An effective leader should have various qualities and out of those communication is an
integral and important quality. A secondary research has been conducted in this regard and it
has been identified that although technology has an important role to play in this context, it
has several issues too besides the various opportunities it presents. Proper strategy is needed
to deal with these issues to improve the process.
Importance of communication for leadership
In order to implement strategy at organization level it is important that the goals and
objectives of the strategy is properly communicated right from the higher authority to the
employees responsible for the implementation of the strategy (Femi 2014).
According to Argenti, A leader is responsible for this and without proper
communication process it is not possible for the leader to identify what are the issues and
challenges that the team members are facing, what are the scope for improvements (2017, p.
148). All these factors need to be properly managed for implementing any new strategy at the
organization level and without proper communication a leader cannot have proper access to
all of these. Hence the ability to communicate effectively is must for a leader for
implementation of strategy.
Opportunities of technology for communication
Instead of traditional meeting arrangement, leaders might consider video conferencing
for arranging meeting with the employees anytime anywhere whenever required. This will
help the leaders to communicate more effectively and efficiently. This will ensure
consistency in workflow (Femi 2014).

According to Westerman, Bonnet and McAfee, The organization could even develop an
organization exclusive application through which the leader will be able assign task to
employees and also keep track of the same (2014, p. 12). Through this strategy the
communication will not only be quick but effective too. The organization could also develop
a communication management portal for holding the communication related data which will
not only help the leader to organise the communication related data but it will be accessible to
all the employees which ensures optimization in workflow
Challenges of technology for communication and strategy for improvement
Communication in the 21st century needs different approach as both the requirement
and method of communication requires advancement. As technology has become an integral
part of 21st century, it has influenced the way is done today and it has a lot of opportunities
for the corporate communication as well (Argenti 2017).
However Femi specifies that there are challenges as well like employers might get
distracted for excessive use of technology in activities like chatting, photo and video sharing
outside of organisational context (2014, p. 79). This could even happen with dedicated
business app as well. Hence activities of the employees need to be closely monitored to
identify how technology impact productivity of the employees as this remains the key issue
of integrating technology into the communication process.
Conclusion
The memo has discussed the fact that communication is necessary for effective leadership
and there is scope for improving the process through the technology. However there are
several issues as well which needs to be improved for effective implementation of technology
for the corporate communication.
