Description of the situation of ethical dilemma
The issue of ethics is such that it is bound by the law of relativity, what is justified to
some, might not be for another person (Vaughn, 2015). Hence human beings are pushed to take
certain decisions which might not be desirable from the point of view of morality that is
considered as universally acceptable. It all depends upon the situation that prevails and on the
basis of it the decisions are taken accordingly. When there occurs a clash between the positive
and the negative values, a situation of ethical dilemma occurs (Lindebaum, Geddes & Gabriel,
2017). That is not a situation from which respite is impossible, rather it requires tactfulness and
the foresight to reconcile the values in a harmonious balance.
The current ethical dilemma that is a matter of concern in this particular situation has
been faced by Ken Meyor, who had served in the military, and he shall be advising Tom Kewan
on taking up a course on life which shall be beneficial for the latter to return back to normal life.
Tom Kewan had served in the military as a sniper who assassinated leaders of the opposing
faction. Due to the incurring of an injury he had to give up on his job as a military personnel in
charge of the duty as a sniper. The civilian life which he had been goaded into became difficult
for him to adjust to. Hence, Tom Kewan had approached Ken Meyor for advice. This is the
situation of ethical dilemma.
The job of a sniper which is about killing people irrespective of who ever the person
might be cannot be considered as ethical from the perspective of the civilians. But that is
considered as justified from the perspective of the government as that is a method of securing the
national interest. This ethical dilemma is not a matter of concern in the present purpose.

The matter of concern herein is to bring back Tom Kewan to mainstream life which is
devoid of adventure that one could derive by killing people, or by being in a mission which could
be as life risking and as thrilling as being a sniper.
Recommendation of a solution
The solution which has been envisaged by Ken Meyor concerns itself with advising a
course on life to Tom Kewan. The advice is not exactly to join any course as such but to indulge
in some service of volunteering for a spiritual organization or going in a retreat which shall make
Tom oblivious to the mechanical humdrums of life. Tom has thus been advised to indulge in
religious service, or go and help in an orphanage or an old age home. These are the possible
solutions which Tom can take in order to return back to normal life. The problem that has
happened with Tom is that he has become too used to the pessimistic view of life and the
exposure to a life which has taught him to be focused on knocking down enemies has turned him
into a person who is quite cynical. As a matter of fact, Tom is not inherently a bad person or that
he is unable to see the good life has to offer. His urge to return back to the life of a sniper is but a
result of his deep seated guilt and a sense of inability to face himself in a world which does not
consider snipers in a positive light. Tom is also in need of treatment and his new organization
must be lenient with him while he undergoes his treatment, as he had hurt himself while working
as a sniper. Hence he has been advised to indulge more in spirituality and devote more service
which are fruitful to mankind, and also take treatment.
This is related to the principle of ethics as spirituality shall be intimating Tom with ways
of upholding morality and be able to do the job which he has been assigned. This is also related ti
the principle of ethics as he had been working as a sniper for the government and as a result of it
he has incurred the physical and moral set back. Hence he should be allowed the space to

recuperate both physically and emotionally in order to be able to bear with the shock of the
paradigmatic shift in life.
Justification for the solution provided
The solution that has been advised is in academic terms known as the method of
adjustment to resolve a conflict (Shapiro & Stefkovich, 2016). The chosen method is justified as
the injury has made Tom unable to take up the role of a sniper again and he has to adjust for two
reasons which are particularly beneficial to his own interest.
First of all, Tom has lost a positive vision about life, and it is extremely necessary for him
to understand that life is not as conflictual as the politics and the government tries to portray it to
be. There is a life which is beyond the battlefield and that it is the real world must be realized by
Tom.
Secondly, Tom is suffering from a sense of self victimization for the acts which he had
committed in the battlefield. He must be freed from the sense of being worthless or an
undesirable human being as the notion of morality is not universally applicable equally.
