1EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE
Analyze the four key elements of emotional intelligence and how they apply to you as a
manager or a student. Are there any elements you need to develop or improve? If so,
why? If not, why not?
The four key elements of emotional intelligence are, self-awareness, self-
management, social awareness and relationship management. Self-awareness relates to the
understanding of self, the feelings and emotions that one feels. Self-management enables the
individual to manage the emotions that they feel. Managing emotions leads to success in life
as it helps in thinking clearly and take logical decisions rather than being guided by emotion.
Social awareness gives people the ability to behave according to the situation. Relationship
management is the ability of people to create connections and bonds with people (Serrat,
2017). It enables people to manage relationships more effectively.
As a student, the key elements of emotional intelligence is relevant to me. Self-
awareness will enable me to understand the emotional situation that I am in and self-
management will help me manage those issues. During my studies, there might be time when
I am feeling particularly hopeless or angry, I will need emotional intelligence to resolve that.
Social awareness informs me about the emotional state of the people that surround me (Miao,
Humphrey & Qian, 2017). Through this I will be able to understand the state of my peers and
find resolutions to make the situation better. Among these qualities, I lack relationship
management. I feel that I am able to understand others but do not have the ability yet to
respond to them or solve them.
According to Vroom’s Expectancy Theory, he suggests people are motivated by two
things: how much they want something, and how likely they think they will get it.
Expectancy is the belief that a particular level of effort will lead to a particular level of
performance. Apply Vroom’s expectancy theory to explain your level of effort in this

class and evaluate if you think your level of effort is reflective of your level of
performance. Explain your rationale.
Vrooms expectancy theory states that the first aspect of motivation is the needs and
desires of individuals. I want to get a good understanding of the coursework, understand how
people and organizations behave and how managers and leaders can effectively manage the
situations. I also want to achieve good grades and secure a job for my future. The second
aspect of Vroom’s expectancy theory suggests that people are also motivated by the likeliness
of achieving the things that they want (Lloyd & Mertens, 2018). Through this course, I
believe that I will be able to achieve all that I want. Due to this reason, I am extremely
motivated and I try my best to complete all the coursework in time and follow the instructions
given by my professors. I also try to read all the assigned readings so that I gain a deeper
understanding.
Discuss how the trend toward globalization is impacting the need for companies to
effectively manage diversity.
Globalization means a closely connected world and thus, the organizations too, have a
diverse population. While many think that including a diverse population into the workforce
is easy, most of the successful managers do not think so (Kinicki et al., 2011). Due to
globalization, the need for diversity is increasing. Globalization means that businesses are
expanding their horizons and are continuously trying to tap new market. Migration is
increasing all over the world and presently it is very difficult to find a country that has a
singular race or ethnicity. Due to this, the people who are working in the organizations
belong to different cultural backgrounds and have different needs and desires. Companies
need to ensure that the workforce is motivated to ensure higher production (Andresen &
Bergdolt, 2017). As companies increase their boundaries, more and more people are coming
