ETHICAL DILEMMAS IN LEADERSHIP
In this complex and challenging corporate world, it is held that ethical dilemmas are daily
faced by leaders and they struggle to consider that what is right and what is wrong while decision
making. Leaders attempt to bring a change, which means their final decision will impact their
followers, so majority of their decision have an ethical element; even if it is a minor one. In
addition, the ethical dilemmas of the followers are often accelerated to the leader to make
decision. Leaders of companies in current times are needed to make better decisions regarding
the gray areas, these are which are included under laws and regulates, but these gray area come
generally in terms of ethics, and ethical standards of what is assessed as right or wrong. At the
same time, the leaders are required to make decisions and plan strategies that can create a
competitive edge. Similarly, these ethical dilemmas showcase a problem which contemporary
time leaders is needed to mitigate. In general, the dilemmas are not based on right against right,
but the right against right choices.
According to the article of Ehrich and co-authors (2015), there were presence of core five
findings. Firstly, the principle implemented data to supervise and inform their practices and
communication with others. Secondly, while ethics was a core consideration in which manner
principles result practising in an ethical manner was determined as challenging and difficult in
the present era. Third, at last ethical structure evidenced to be reliable for understanding practices
of principles. Thus, all of the principles stated to the dilemmas they experienced as a
consequence competing preferences and all implemented a range of strategies to address with
ethical dilemmas.
In the article of Meeting the ethical challenges of leadership, it is held that unethical
leaders can cast shadows if they mistreat power, hoard privileges, misuse information, act in an
inconsistent manner, abuse or deceive loyalties and do not succeed in conducting their
responsibilities (Johnson, 2017). These are main ethical challenges, and these shadows can pose
conflicts among leaders.
Ethical dilemma is the most common problem faced by leaders from traditional times in

moral and ethical on daily basis, they face issues in what is wrong and what is right in question.
It is said that everyone face situations wherein their professional liabilities unexpectedly arrive at
conflict with the intense and insightful value, all are caught in a clash among right and right
(David., 2004).
Further, no matter what is selected by leaders, it is believed that they have arrived at an
insufficient conclusion. It is held that, choosing between right and wrong is a bothersome gray
area. There are two main approaches that are used by leaders in addressing the ethical dilemmas
and challenges. First is to concentrate on the consequences on a practical basis of what is done
by them and other concentrates on the initiatives and evaluate the rightness of the action in itself.
In the article, a three step procedure is applied for resolving an ethical issue, first step is
analyzing the outcomes, second step is analysing the taken initiatives and actions and the third
step is making a viable decision.
The ethical shortcomings of organizational leaders have to result in the development of
effective actions and aspects to seek better ethical leadership. These actions have mainly
considered for the evaluation of the ethical leadership traits of their leaders. Generally leaders
held themselves experiences with making challenging and competent ethical decisions. In
present times, in this article a validated leadership based self assessment tool is implemented that
evaluates the prioritized leadership style of leader (Chikeleze & Baehrend Jr, 2017). This present
article, drawn a conclusion that leaders give priority to a specified ethical leadership style.
Further, ethical leadership style knowledge is extremely good in order to interpret the procedure
they use while facing ethical dilemmas. Thus, this approach and actions might be beneficial in
guiding and developing leaders, and firms to make ethical decisions, thus making reduction in
the events of poor and adverse ethical dilemmas.
