University Leadership Ethics: Week 2 Case Study Analysis

This case study analysis examines ethical dilemmas in leadership through three case studies. The first case explores human rights violations in North Korea, analyzing the country's oppressive regime and the international community's response. The second case delves into the Flint, Michigan water crisis, focusing on administrative evil, governmental responsibility, and environmental racism. The analysis highlights the slow response of authorities and the disproportionate impact on the city's poor and Black residents. The third case study evaluates Subway's response to a scandal involving its spokesperson, addressing issues of corporate responsibility and ethical decision-making. The analysis also includes an in-depth examination of the Flint, Michigan case, with a focus on question 4, exploring the role of race and class in the crisis.

Response to 4.1.1:
Nation which actively denied human rights and is engaged in committing crimes
includes Cambodia. In Cambodia, children, men and women are forced into modern slavery,
forced marriage, debt bondage, forced begging and even sexual exploitation. Moreover in this
country forced labour is mostly common in areas of farming, construction and manufacturing
(Enos, 2020).
Response to 4.1.2:
The international community should not provide food aid to North Korea because it is
difficult to find a positive result for the same. This is so because the Pyongyang government
has simply spent most of the portion of their resources on nuclear weapons and 1other
luxurious items.
Response to 4.1.3:
Some of the major evils visible in the case studies includes- malnutrition, public
executions, starvations, secret prison camps and labour camps.
Response to 4.1.4:
UN should not risk its relationship with China for stopping the murders and human
right violations because the UN council is only the one that is present creating pressure upon
the North Korean officials by recommending introduction of different mechanisms.

Response to 4.2.1:
This is definitely a case of administrative evil as the interests of the marginalised
community of people were neglected on one hand and on the other hand, the leader continued
carrying out his duties as assigned to him. This is so because administrative evil occurs when
the administrators fail to understand the ethical issues or human conditions in a particular
situation.
Response to 4.2.2:
The governor is equally responsible for the present scenario because although he
spent 28 million dollars for improving the present situation but he was too late in his actions.
This is basically for the current health issues because the governor has understood his mistake
and has finally started to look after the issues. The expenses will be borne at the state level.
Response to 4.2.3:
Governors have the power to appoint emergency managers who can look after
emergency situations as in the case of Flint Michigan. Moreover these emergency managers
should also be allowed to take decisions in coordination with other local officials to arrive at
a conclusion.
Response to 4.2.4:
The legislations was slow in its activities in Flint Michigan because the city is poor
and black as has been confirmed by many officials. 40% of the citizens of that particular city
belong to the below poverty line group.

Response to 4.3.1:
Subways handling was fast and transparent to the public for the scandal that has
recently taken place which was related to spokesman of subway. The company took the
responsibility for its spokesperson and immediately took serious actions against him.
Response to 4.3.2:
Subway had a responsibility to the victims of Fogle and therefore they had agreed to
pay about 100,000 dollars to the victims and undergo imprisonment for a period of 15 years
as one of the registered sex offenders (Meeting the Ethical Challenges of Leadership., 2020).
Response to 4.3.3:
Subway should not show any remorse towards fogles crimes because he had not only
damaged the brand image but had also indulged in violation of some major human rights.
Response to 4.3.4:
The company should take up child sexual abuse as a corporate cause and this act can
also been seen as admission of guilt by the company.
Analysis of question 4 of case study 4.2
I feel that the residents of Flint city Michigan, were treated differently because they
were poor and also comprised of African Americans (The Independent., 2020). Moreover the
misleading and the slow response from the different local authorities was a result of the
environmental racism. Moreover the mayor confessed the fact that had the city not been
majorly occupied by black and poor people the response of the legislation in this situation
would have been different. The city is mainly occupied by different minorities in terms of

race and even class. The state officials have been accused of wilful neglect. Besides, the
mayor the Michigan civil rights commissions were also of the opinion that the entire scenario
was a result of environmental racism. Both the patties felt that structural, systematic and
historical racism along with the implicit bias led to all the decision and the negative
consequences. And this situation would not have happened if the city would have been
occupied by rich and white people. Moreover the city itself is a result of historical systematic
racism. It is still believed that race is a major factor behind the incident and the slow action
of the legislation to overcome the situation. In fact the mayor was of the opinion that all the
local, state and national level were equally responsible for the situation.
