1LEADERSHIP IN HOSPITAL
The healthcare delivery system is very vast, and it continues to evolve in the future. A
good leader or a team leader will help inefficient delivery of care to all the patients or clients
(Sarto & Veronesi, 2016). Generally, it is found that deficiency in guidance or assigning clear
responsibilities and duties leads to failing patient care. This essay will give an overview of
understanding the importance of leadership in the hospital. It will discuss on duties and
responsibilities of the caregiver in the hospital and its practices.
I have a responsibility for taking care of ten clients with different needs. I received all
the following handover from the night staff. I have a team of two assistants. One assistant is
very efficient in time management and highly experienced in the relevant field. The other
assistant has worked merely for two months and did not receive any hands-on experiences. In
the morning meeting, I am going to assign them responsibilities to assist all ten clients. The
first assistant has a good extent of knowledge and thus, he can assist all the needs of critical
clients. The responsibility would include providing rehabilitation care to a critical client after
injury or any major surgery. The first assistant will also assist in any physical therapy or
exercise. The supporting method or technique for the first assistant will be coaching.
Coaching the main objective is to improve the quality. Quality can be any like workplace
safety, quality care, outcomes of clients (Smith, 2015). He already has all the relevant skillset
to perform his responsibility; I would evaluate his current knowledge and recognize any part
that needs improvement. I will brief all the responsibilities that he has to follow. I will help
from a distance if he needs any guidance while performing his duties.
The second assistant does not have much experience in the field of a caregiver. The
responsibility needs to assign him would be like assisting the client in helping with
medication, helping in shifting from one place to another, helping in serving a meal or bath. I
would choose buddying as the supporting method for considering his needs. Buddying is

organization (Leach et al., 2019). As he is new in the field, I have to provide insight into daily
operations and responsibilities. I need to specify all the works and responsibilities need to be
followed at the end of the day.
‘The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership’ is a framework to develop efficient
leadership (Kouzes & Posner, 2014). As a team leader, I would prefer three practices from
the framework. The first one is ‘Model the way.’ Every responsibility needs to be clearly
understood by all the member of a team. Hence, this model talks about leading by example.
For better understanding, suppose a client needs medication at every interval of time, by
demonstrating the role and giving clear instruction about it will help my staff to understand
his responsibility.
The second practice can be to ‘Inspire a shared vision.’ In this practice, leaders can
see their team member's ability and production virtually. Leaders need lots of continual
efforts and monitoring to turn the vision into reality. I would create multiple opportunities for
them to work upon and achieve the stated vision. For example, in Age care hospital clients
want a special home service post to their surgery. It creates an opportunity for my staff to
enhance by providing service and get a good exposure as well as experience.
The third practice can be to ‘Encourage the heart.’ For instance, one of my staff is
new and has very little experience of work, even a petite amount of success needs to be
praise. It will encourage him to work better and develop the quality of care for the client.
However, the work is under very much pressure, the environment is also stress, providing
adequate rewards, and recognition will help him to build confidence and encouragement
towards his duties and responsibilities.
It can be concluded that as a team leader, I need to understand the needs of all the
clients and also the needs of my team members. I have to assist all the staff of my team to
