Introduction
This assignment will cover my distinctive approach to specific and unique leadership
contribution while completing our final team assignment of tackling an international human
resource (HR) dilemma. I and my team members had identified a significant issue of sexual
harassment faced by an employee in Uber. We found this issue from Uber as the most recent
as well as interesting to write about. We did a lot of research and in-depth analysis to come
up with the HR recommendations for this issue. I had even applied perspective taking and
empathetic listening as my major approaches for ensuring that there is a submission of high-
quality deliverable for our final team assignment (Bolman & Deal, 2017).
Contribution 1: Perspective Taking Team Member
Perspective taking becomes extremely critical whenever one is working in a diverse
group. It helps in every aspect like from communicating ideas effectively or diffusing tensed
situations (Galinsky & Schweitzer, 2016, p.33). The first and the foremost step in our final
assignment was to identify the topic. It was one of the most challenging tasks. Since each of
us had different understanding of the topic, our team was struggling to finalize the topic for
the assignment. As a result, we had identified three HR issues from three different
organisations. We were struggling to reach an agreement for finalization of the topic. The
issue that I identified seemed most interesting to me. Hence, I wanted the team to go with the
topic of my choice. For sorting out the complication of finalizing the topic, I decided to step
in as a facilitator. I started to pen down the individual perspective of every team member
regarding all identified topics. To reach to the respective objective of completing this team
assignment, I needed a great steering wheel which was the perspective taking so that I do not
crash under any circumstance (Galinsky & Schweitzer, 2016, p.35). After consideration of
the opinion of every member of the team, I decided to go with the topic that was agreed on by

the majority of my team members. Next, I prepared the outline of our assignment with mutual
team agreement. Dhiman (2011) identified that one of the major characteristics of authentic
leadership is building the support team (p. 81). Hence, for building my support team, I
suggested that team members can choose their respective parts to work upon according to
their interest areas.
After successfully executing my perspective taking approach, I noticed the team
motivation was increased. It helped in boosting the team morale and even helped the team
members to communicate well with one another. Due to effective communication, the team
efficiently started working towards the shared goal of delivering the high-quality work. It
helped all of us to organise, remember, and make sense of the works (Galinsky & Schweitzer,
2016, p.34). I even observed that the team members were willing to express their thoughts
and opinions freely. Perspective taking had helped me to focus on others and find a common
ground (Goleman, 2013, p.55). This was also helpful for gaining valuable insights into the
recognized issue for our final team assignment. It led us to propose four recommendations
from different areas of HR. Team members felt engaged in this assignment as their opinions
were heard which connected them to achieve the mission of delivering high-quality work (Su
& Wilkins, 2014, p.53). Enhanced team engagement helped in preparing the first draft of an
assignment right on time for getting feedback from everyone.
Contribution 2: Good Listener
Good listening is required for managing any type of issue faced in a team. A good
listener is attentive and encourage ideas from the other team members and thus
communication is strongly enhanced within a team. Following on my identification of a
proper topic for the final assignment, the last step in this team assignment was the
compilation of individual work. It was required to match everyone’s ideology and thoughts
for making our assignment successful. However, during compilation, I found that my thought

was not matching with the rest of the team. The main reason for this type of mismatch was
diversified team. Due to this diversity, each one of us had different approach and different
thought process. I acted maturely and decided to listen to my team members. I used a positive
body language and leaned forward for showing a relaxed and enthusiastic nature. I even
asked questions regarding the ideas they gave and tried to become a good listener. Being a
part of diversified team, the message from team members were often misunderstood and it
was required to be eradicated for maintenance of team morale.
After being a good listener, I observed that slowly this diversity was reduced and all
the team members were communicating with the rest of the team. Since, it was a diverse
group, an effective listening was extremely important. It is a way to show concern for the
team members and helps in fostering cohesive bonds, trust and commitment. As our team was
executing a team assignment from different areas of HR, it was required to provide a proper
solution. I focused on listening and wanted to become a good listener, since I felt that all the
team members might not feel equally important if they are not providing the chance to speak
out. With the verbal communication and effective and empathetic listening, I was finally
successful to convince my team that my thought was perfect for the assignment. I even took
ideas from the rest of the team members and it underpinned a positive democratic leadership
skill.
Conclusion
Therefore, I can conclude that I was able to show my leadership skills for ensuring
that our team is able to provide a proper deliverable for final assignment. While executing the
work, I had the significant responsibility to apply empathetic listening and perspective taking
approaches to help out my team members during the clash of ideas and tensed situations. The
outcome of my leadership skills was that we were able to complete our final assignment with
utmost efficiency.
