The leadership is a characteristic of the functions of army. The leadership is defined
in various terms. According to the general view, the leadership refers to a capacity to guide
and motivate the group of individuals to get the objectives and better results. The leadership
means an art, which can be technically reviewed and established. In context of army, the
leadership has deciding element in war (Goddard, Hazelkorn&Vallance, 2016). When going
through the leadership characteristics, it may not seem possible to have the perfect army
leader. In the following parts, the contemporary issues of leadership face by army is
discussed and critically examined.
In a present time, the army is well equipped and very responsive in the well-storied
past. However, for as numerous things military is conducting accurate in making the best
fighting strength, this also handles the contemporary problems of leadership that present
challenges to its non-commissioned officials. One of the major leadership issues that deter the
performances of army is talent management. As according to the Non-commissioned officer
strategy 2016, the talent refers to the sum total of the specific skills of soldiers, personal
experience faces by them, and conducts. There are significant roles of the personal
experiences of soldiers, individual and family relations, moral and socio-economic
framework, character, learning, and academics style in contributing to create the raw talent of
soldiers (Johnson, 2017).
Further, the talent management is considered as the general and proper investment,
which keeps balance between the requirements of the institution and soldiers. It makes sure
proper settlement, and authorises the workers. Therefore, the talent management is much
more than the system of supporting a soldier with open requests or applications to fulfil the
present and upcoming requirements of the Military. To manage the activities related to talent
management, it is required that army should make sure that all the activities are well-versed
with the principles of talent management (Wilson, 2017).

As per my personal experience, I can say that the leadership challenges are very
general to the senior leaders at the time of conducting the difficult peace and humanitarian
functions that have been the major operational employment of army forces. While attending
the military campaign, I realise that the leadership challenges may be an obstacle for army
force. I came to know that without a perfect leader the army force cannot work in efficient
and proper manner. I understood that making the proper understanding with the team creates
it less likely that own problems and opposition may sneak in and upset the team. It is clear
that while the army team is alert and careful that the leader is sympathetic to the trepidation,
then they would be more likely to do function with leader and commander, and also share in
the vision, in place of temporary adverse feelings. I analysed that because of compromisation
with leadership doctrines and characteristics, the leader does not qualify as role model for the
juniors. It has the cascade effect over junior leadership. Honesty, beliefs and values mainly
amongst senior officers have become suspect.
As per the above analysis, it can be concluded that leadership is an action to direct the
group of people. In a present time, the army faces various leadership challenges. It is not
possible for the commanders to understand the expertise and talent of the soldiers because of
the less time. In this way, the Human Resources Command assigns people to a particular unit.
Therefore, leaders should look for understand the specific skills, experience, and behaviour of
soldiers, and place them consequently. When leader sets the directions, they are required to
use administration skills to give guidance to individuals to a correct destination, in the easy
and effective manner.
It is recommended to the army leaders to have clear vision. Because the vision is a
good source of efficiency of leaders. The sense of vision can be specific mission or an
intention of senior leader for the battle or campaign. The vision renders the ability to handle
and manage army team. The reason is that vision develops the focus for activities and

direction to a company that would follow. Vision is a foundation over that the leaders or
senior leaders develop the ethical powers of leadership, stimulate the specialised means
required to assemble and sustain faith, unity, commitments, and would to face various
challenges and issues (Abalkhail, 2017).
