2LEADERSHIP
Indra Nooyi, the name behind PEPSICO’s success has one of the most influential
transformational leadership styles among her contemporaries. She advocated the primary goal of
PEPSICO to ‘performance with a purpose’ strategic initiative (Hawkins, 2017). She emphasized
on value addition to products and her vision was for sustaining the changed culture of the
organization with time. Environmental focus was the key to sustainability of an organization was
first emphasized by her and she focused on the three P’s ‘People, Product and the Planet’ (Jyoti
& Bhau, 2016). She has the efficient balance of three personal skills namely technical, human
and conceptual. She always puts people first and she was a people’s leader where she worked to
ensure her followers and other employees that PEPSICO is a good company to work with. She
equally focused on environmental sustainability and communal development at the same time.
She was the master of putting transformation into motion and has a well-developed plan to
execute and a motivated workforce to work on the plan (Mukherjee, 2016). She is an
amalgamation of the four I’s of transformational leadership who has idealized influences,
inspirational attribute to motivate, intellectual stimulation and individual consideration as well.
Her 5C’s leadership style encompassing competency, courage, communication, confidence and
compassion impacted PEPSICO’s roles and functions largely (Salleh & Grunewald, 2013).
Customer valuation and employee empowerment were her strengths in achieving the success of
the organization. Her high standards, ethics and morals help PEPSICO to rule the market for
such a long time. Personality and behavior cannot be learned, they can be imitated to a great
extent but for long run survival one need to have their own potential and caliber to succeed
(Hawkins, 2017). Indra Nooyi was a people’s leader and this attribute of her will remain as the
major strengths of her transformational leadership styles.
