Nursing Assignment 1
Roles of leaders within a healthcare setting include a representative of organization,
motivators, guide, integrator of personal and professional goals, a supporter of subordinates
and coordinators. On the contrary, Fischer (2016) has mentioned that management functions
include planning, organizing, staffing, directing and controlling. Leaders play an important
role in management of staff and they help in enhancing job satisfaction. On the other hand,
management functions help internal stakeholders of organization to implement an appropriate
strategy to achieve goals. Both leadership roles and management functions are important for
maintaining organizational functions. For example, in case of emergency patient care, leaders
motivate and guide a team of nurses to handle the case with care. At the same situation,
managers arrange all required facilities that can help healthcare team to provide quick care to
the patient.
A nurse can apply transformational leadership style to increase maintenance of hygiene
among other staff. This can help to mitigate the problem of hospital-acquired infection (HAI)
that is a current healthcare priority. As opined by Portoghese, Galletta, Battistelli & Leiter
(2015), transformational leadership style helps leaders to motivate others and a change can be
initiated through proper organization. For example, a nursing leader can encourage
subordinates to maintain personal hygiene like wearing gloves, which can help to lower the
rate of infection. This leadership style can help to change the workplace culture and thus
infection can be controlled. Therefore, the productivity of the nursing team can increase and
risks of infection will be decreased. This leadership style can help the nurse to train others
creatively and regular mentorship can help to improve the performance of subordinates.
