Introduction
Leadership and management are the terms which are often used as synonyms in an
organisation. However it is necessary to understand that leadership is still included in
management. Being a crucial component in management and leadership behaviour focuses on
building an environment in the organisation so that every employee can develop and excel in
their skill and abilities (Marques and Gomes, 2020). It also prefers to put potentially good efforts
towards accomplishment of a new subject is in goals. It is often seen that influencer uses a
number of formal sources which also provides them managerial position in business.
Main Body
Leadership
Leadership was a word people started using 30 years ago. There are various authors such as
Joseph Kottet, Peter Drucker and Warren Bennis who introduced the differentiation between
various roles of managers and leaders in 90s. Leadership and management in an organisation or
going hand-in-hand. However they are not same but they are very closely linked and
complimentary to each other. If an organisation tries to separate both of them this can cause
problems in organisation. A manager‘s job is to plan, coordinate and organise whereas job of a
leader is to inspire and motivate individuals in an organisation.
Difference between managers and leaders
According to Warren Bennis “On becoming leader” in 1989 have listed various differences
between managers and leaders which include that a manager is an investigator where is leader is
an innovator. Author also explains that Manager maintains whereas a leader is responsible for
development. The major focus of Manager is on all systems and structure and the leader focuses
on people and individuals in an organisation. Manager focuses on short-term targets whereas
leaders are focusing on long-term perspective. The manager imitates whereas the letter is
responsible to originate. These are various differences brought in by Warren Bennis through his
book.
There were also three distinct levels made for leaders as well as managers which explained
their roles in organisation. These three distinctions included direction, alignment and
relationship. A leader is responsible to direct employs by keeping an eye on the horizon and also
creating various vision and strategy is for them (Hallinger, 2020). In order to bring in alignment

a leader is creating shared cultures and values within organisation helping others to grow and
reducing boundaries. To manage relationship and organisation leader focuses on people by
inspiring followers and motivating them. They also act as coach, facilitator. When taking
managers into consideration a manager is responsible for directing planning and budgets in the
organisation. They also are keeping an eye on the bottom line individuals in the organisation. In
order to maintain alignment in organisation managers are organising and staffing, directing and
controlling and also creating boundaries for various employs in the organisation. To manage
relationship in the organisation managers focuses on objectives they want to produce goods and
services based upon position of power and also actors supervisor in the organisation.
Present scenario of leadership and management
When looking at present scenario of leadership and management it is seen that there are a
number of new leadership styles developed by managers in order to deal with changing external
environment. It is necessary for leaders and managers to have emotional abilities and self-
awareness in order to manage distress emotions of others in the organisation. This also helps
them to develop affective relationship with employs (Bush, Bell and Middlewood, 2019).
Various leadership theories are used in today’s world include visionary leadership which teaches
how strong positive changes can be brought in an organisation.
Coaching leadership is another style of leadership which connects employees in organisation
with managers to build long term capabilities. Mary Barra the CEO of General Motors is using
coaching leadership style as she has knowledge of working in product development, supply chain
and purchasing she can successfully guide employees.
Affiliated leadership is the style of leadership in which is created between employees in the
organisation so that people can connect to each other. It brings in a positive impact on the
climate of organisation. Huateng Pony Ma the President of Tencent is an influential person. He
uses affiliated leadership while dealing with employees.
Democratic leadership is a leadership style which values the input of people and also the
commitment they are showing while participating in organisational work. Bob Iger is the CEO of
Disney Corporation who is successfully using democratic leadership. He have successfully
acquired companies like Marvel, Lucas Films, Pixar etc. with the help of his leadership style.
Commanding leadership is a style of leadership followed by a number of leaders in today’s
environment where they give a clear direction to employs on the timer for majority. However it

is often seen that commanding leadership business used by leader and me bring in negative
effects for the organisation. Reed Hashtings the co-founder and CEO of Netflix have been using
commanding leadership (Gürlek and Çemberci, 2020). His bold decisions when he started as no-
late-fees, no-due-dates and online streaming etc. have shook foundation of digital entertainment.
Pace setting leadership is another leadership style in which various challenges and goals are
met successfully. However it is often seen that in order to get high-quality results leaders are
putting pressure on employees which might affect them negatively. Jack Ma the founder of
AliBaba have set the scales for his organisation very high. This have successfully enabled him to
successfully run his business.
Role of management
The role of management is clarified as it helps organisation to move towards their goals
successfully. In today’s era management plays an important role as globalization of economy
and change in external environment have led to various changes in organisation as well. It is
necessary for organisations to make sure that managers are representing their organisational
design and structure in the organisation. The structure of Amazon's management allows proper
communication between employees leading them to success. It is necessary that manages inherit
industrial era and outlived their usefulness (Hassi, 2019). It is necessary for management to make
sure that they are creative enough in creating capacity to work with the minimal resources
available to them and produce extraordinary outcomes. The management in Google is allowing
their employees to come up with innovative ideas which are helpful in fulfilment of their
objectives. They need to generate prosperity for organisation and all the employees in the
organisation as well. The management is required to reject the traditional practises and use
upgraded practises in organisation to deal with manipulative environment. Management in an
organisation is now required to inspire customers as well as employees in the organisation. It is
necessary for them to bring in innovation through helping their employs and executing a
disciplined method to bring benefits for organisation. There are a number of multinational
companies in different sectors such as Tesco in retail sector, Toyota in automotive, HSBC in
financial sector who are continuously bringing in innovations along with required changes in
management to smoothly run their business in changing external environment.

Conclusion
With the help of above-mentioned description on changing roles of management and
leadership it can be clarified that both of these factors have dramatically evolved over the period
from 90s. Organisations today need to discover various new theories of leadership and
management which might suit their business well and adapted in order to make sure that they are
achieving all their goals and objectives. It is necessary that businesses are successfully using
leadership and management in order to maximize their shareholder values, bringing efficiency in
business, increasing their productivity and also increasing profitability for the business.
