INTRODUCTION
Leadership & management has been termed as a most necessary concept in world of
business entity and its role or process. In the current era of business, leadership has led making
effective & productive leader, whose motive is to enhance business goals & objective completed
in given period of time and management is a way to manage things. Also, relationship between
two are most responsive and being declared as productive in taking effective decision taking for
an individual and business entity both (Dignam and et. al., 2012). This report will be carry on
ASDA, which is a British supermarket retailer, headquartered in Leeds, United Kingdom. Its
parent organisation is well-known Walmart. ASDA is highly specialised in selling groceries,
George clothing, merchandise and financial services. In response, this report will cover concept
of leadership and management and differences between these two. Also, there will be discussion
of any one leadership theory. Also, there will be clear discussion on how these theories are
helpful into enhancing retail sector in an entire UK and also report will also tells about
management development program, whose focus is on discussing different aspects of the
leadership & management.
(a) Define concepts of management and leadership and highlight the differences between the two
Leadership and management are two interrelated concepts in an environment of working
world and business entity, which is highly used to grow business performance along with
empowering the people at a greater context. Leadership in business terms are generally perform
by a “leader” and management initiates by “manager”. Leader means one who lead or upfront
its own team or group of people at one point of time. On other side, manager is one whose major
task is to manage things or any kind of critical issues to develop business productivity and define
outcomes in given period of time. As, it is necessary to raise business & operational growth in a
retail sector (Galloway, 2017). In context with ASDA, leadership is pure regulation on
effectiveness and continues role of initiatives to manage things with suitability to get business
lead.
Leader is one who is passionate, responsive, goal oriented and specially focused on fixed
role or duty to be performed. He is one who manages an organisation purpose to be achieved and
led its evaluation in given point of time. These both entities are required in retail sector of UK, as

their to be manages. In ASDA, firm is suffering with an issue of improper leadership and process
of management, which is a major critical issues, which needs a rapid solution. First, its necessary
to have identification in context of role of leader and manager and then its linkage in context of
business performance (Gopee, 2017). There is a need of relevant solution which are necessary to
develop role of effective management and leadership, for this it is necessary to have major
discussion over roles of manager and leader of ASDA and then critical difference between both
two. Role and function of:
Leader:
Leading people for development: This is a major role of leader's is to enhance skills,
traits & competencies to lead effective development or encouraging growth of an individual or
business retail units to establish profit at higher & optimised level. In ASDA, this is prominent
task to be pursue to make work for more effective into the business function of ASDA.
Resource utilisation: As, leader is one who majorly undertaken resources to led
activities related to enhancing skills and talent of the team member's in order to make leading of
employee effective in the ASDA, because resource costs company huge.
Manager: Role and function of the manager's are divided into three different categories
are as such:
Interpersonal includes role of figurehead, an effective leader and liaison

orientation of leader's self on large basis by top level manager, so that they will enhance
motivation & confidence of an each and every employee's on productive to give major growth to
business functioning of ASDA (Vaccaro and et. al., 2012).
Also, leader of the ASDA must have suitable vision or mission along with strategic and
compulsive objective to be gained to bring accomplishment of the given outcomes for this retail
firm “ASDA”. It is necessary for this leading retailer to enhance their business operation at an
optimised stage. It was also realised that in UK, role of leader or management is increasing along
with its respond to given objectives of suitability. In that condition, it is necessary for ASDA to
raise strategic goal accomplishment at a greater level.

According to the Jenny Parry, leadership is considered as a practice, of which major
purpose is to lead defined team in a defined or appropriate way to attain given targets or goals to
bring self competency or potential to enhance business growth. It was realised that, leadership
theories are highly responsive to solve problems related to leadership issues or problems at a
given point of time and also recognised as best way to led clear & prospective results out of the
leadership theory or related manner of methodology and also practices or work to make ASDA
business and operational place more effective to contribute to working with defined strategic
goals or purpose (Mládková, 2012). Also, leadership theories are majorly focused towards
development of individual and team group to ascertain results or outcomes in an effective
prospective manner or way.

set by facing one another with the soles on their feet together and holding hands setting on the
